Which way do I go?
« on: Sep 08, 2013, 06:13:42 AM »
Well, the 22re in my 86 bit the dust the other day. I've checked timing, timing chain, guides, and compression. All are perfect. Motor has a loud knock and no power at all. I'm starting to think its in the bottom end, spun a bearing, etc...

So here's where Im at, buy a crate motor. Pros, warranty, its also new.
Cons, lots of bad reviews, experience expensive

Buy used motor. Pros, fair price, plenty of them
Cons, no warranty. Most have high mileage. Dont know what you're getting into.

Swap to a 2rz/3rz. Only problems with this is time and cost. Its my dd. I'd like to get it up and going again preferably somewhat soon. also I can't go spending 2k on a swap right now.

Any input is appreciated. Also, I'm in Nashville, tn. So if any of you people around here have a freshly rebuilt motor, or want to come wrench, beer is on me!

I am in the same boat. Im really leaning towards a 3RZ swap.. 22r(e) just doesnt cut it in terms of power. also doesnt get the best fuel economy. I would just buy another used 22r(e) for cheap and smack it in there until you get your $duckets$ ligned up. You could have the 22 motor in there in a day easy. That way you dont have to worry about gettin to work.  :usa:

Thats kinda what I'm thinking. But most used 22re's around here go for $500 with 300k miles and a blown head gasket. I just cant get make sense of doing that in my head

I got a 22re crate motor for $800 from a local auto parts store. It's good piece of mind knowing that nothing is worn out inside the motor.  :twocents:

I have a 22r for sale but it's like you said high miles around 200k for 400 bucks. If I had the dollars I would go 3rz. I am gonna drop one in mine as soon as I get the ducks lined up. I have a Jasper rebuild in my truck now with less than 10k on it so I am good till I can find  my 3RZ.

Put up a post  in parts wanted saying you want a 22r. Maybe somebody swapped a good one out for a different motor and just doesnt care for it.. most of the people on here are honest.

I got it from California Auto Parts in Concord California. But even if they could ship cheap (probably not) there was a core charge.

It ran okay, but it is mostly just the long block, I am not sure what other parts I have for it. I am in KY so not really that far away. I figured who ever bought it would mostly want to rebuild it. but it did run.
I swapped it because I had the almost new jasper motor.

I am in Richmond Ky if ya wanna take a chance on mine I might could meet ya partway. $400.00 Like I said it ran but I really don't know jack about it because I swapped it out as soon as I bought the truck. Most junk yard motors around here go for 1000. That's just wrong.

I know what ya mean. I spent all lunch calling around. Found one with 268k, no warranty, $850. But, let me look a little more. I'll keep ya as a backup. Alright?

Lebanon,TN. About 30 minutes easy of Nashville.

The search might be over. A close friend has a relative that builds race motors for a living. He's done a few 22re's. He's offered to completely rebuild a 22re for me. Machining, all new parts, etc... $700-800 for a ready to drop in motor. So I believe thats the route I'll be going.
