Ok, so I have wheeled swamp a few times now. I keep heering about how there is an old mining town up there and some other stuff. So far I have found one mine and the cabin. I am going up there later today and plan on being up there until sunday. Does any body know where the mining town and some of the other mines I have heard about are?

You might be hearing about the old tungsten mine at Mud Lakes,it's been closed off to the public since about 1990. I remember when the trail went through there before that.

Ed... is there a way to get there on foot? We r spending three nights up in tha I area so there is no need to rush the trip and a liytke hiking sounds like fun

rainbow mine

I have not been there since the 1980s!! This just brought back a ton of memories I had long forgotten!!

Our dog Cinnamon fell into the mine shaft from above and down to the lower level, which is gated shut and locked such that we could not rescue her, and then about 3 mins later she came walking out from the lower shaft unscathed!

Swamp is my favorite of all the local trails. I actually like it better than ershim.

It's private property and the owners like their privacy. You need to be invited in by one of them. Plus a lot of the attractions have been removed since the trail was routed around. Many of the little cabins the workers lived in are gone, mess hall is gone, big 2 storied cabin is gone(burned down),the warehouse type building that had pumps in it is gone. It's nothing like I remember when I was younger.

It's not that set up, ATM I have 33's, no lockers (yet)  I have a 3.5 inch lift front and rear with coil overs up front with total chaos upper A arms.  I am not sure if I want to put the money to upgrade it and buy lockers etc, or more what I'm leaning towards  is selling my 4runner and putting the money towards a 79-85 pickup.

Wheeling is all about the driver and his spotter's skills, vehicle set-up is secondary.

I have seen that even in the brief time. Have been partaking in the hobby.  I did blackbear pass in a stock rental jeep rubicon :) that was a blast

A good driver rarely needs a spotter.

Then why do "pros" use spotters?

Last year me and a couple others were going through Dusy Ershim and came up behind a group that were spotting each other along Courtright between Little Thompson and Dusy Creek. We got on their CB channel and heard one say "Let me know when you get through that spot,it's a pretty tough one". We did the whole trail and only spotted 1-2 times, and it certainly wasn't by Courtright. We were unaware there was anyone that needed so much spotting, seems I found a couple more here.

Did it occur to you that they could have been new/beginners to the hobby, or had one or two in the group whom they were trying to teach how to wheel correctly?

Use a host site like photobucket.com, there wont be a size limit since the forums server wont be storing the pic data, just the link data.

There is a series of trail books by Roger Mitchell, that might be helpful, the one  titled "High Sierra SUV Trails", and covers trails from Eagle Lakes to Kernville..  He uses the 1-5 trail rating system, and gives a brief description of things to see that are within short hiking distances from the trail.  It edition I have covers tails from Auburn(Fordyce creek trail, but only as far as Eagle Lakes), down to the trails out of Kernville, and has about 30 or so pages covering the trails out of Shaver Lake, including Dusy and Swamp.

The fishing at swamp is dead. Seams like there was no fish at al,  I think dfg needs to stock the lake.

sparkys83yota

We killed it fishing in little dorris. 2 hours probably 30 fish. We released all of them!

Size?

sparkys83yota

Not that big. The biggest was 10". All native so we didnt want to kill them. We were using spinners. Last week we camped at strawberry and on the way home swung by swamp lake trail w tarov6. Finally got to see one of the mines.
