Spoke to the Prather office and fires will not be allowed starting tomorrow unless you are in a designated site. A designated site is one with a host or one you pay to stay at. She didn't know how long the ban will be in affect.

I got the forest order PDF from the OHV ranger. It lists developed campgrounds as being okay to have fires. These include free sites without a host, such as Bretz and Kirch Flat. The order says it will be in effect for the entire fire season, usually ends in October.

As dry as the winter was and as hot as it has been, I wouldn't be surprised if they ban them altogether, even at the national/state parks here in CA, they have done it in the past.

Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), and to provide for public safety and protect natural
resources, the following acts are prohibited within the Sierra National Forest. This Order is
effective from July 2,2013, through the end of the official 2013 fire season.
1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, except in the
Designated Recreation Sites listed in Exhibit A. 36 CFR 261.52(a).
2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or within the Designated Recreation Sites
listed in Exhibit A. 36 CFR 261.52( d).
3. Operating an internal combustion engine, except on a National Forest System road or
trail. 36 CFR 261.52(h).
4. Welding, or operating an acetylene or other torch with an open flame. 36 CFR 261.52(i).
5. Using an explosive. 36 CFR 261.52(b).
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50( e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
1. Persons with a permit from the Forest Service specifically authorizing the otherwise
prohibited act or omission. Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are not
exempt from the prohibitions listed above. However, persons with a valid California
Campfire Permit are allowed to use portable stoves or lanterns using gas, jellied
petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel.
2. Any Federal, State, or local officer or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting
force in the performance of an official duty.
3. Persons with a Special Use Permit from the Forest Service for a recreation residence
within the Sierra National Forest area may use a campfire or stove fire at their recreation
residence.
4. Persons with a valid woodcutting permit may operate a chainsaw to cut fuel wood in
compliance with the terms of the permit.
These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A.
A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for an
individual or $10,000.00 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or
both. 16 USC 551 and 18 USC 3559, 3571, and 3581.

so no propane stoves? i heading to bald mountain right now and was gonna grill at the top of bald

i see a fire restriction for sequoia national forest but not for sierra national forest
bald mountain is sierra so i should be good?

Propane BBQ's, stoves, lights, or white gas ones are allowed under fire restriction, just not open flame fired ones.

Normally, if one National forest in the area is under restrictions, all of them in the region are, and I think you need a valid campfire permit even for propane/white gas stoves, BBQ's, and lights.

So, if the order applies to 'designated' camp sites with FS issued fire rings campfires are ok?  As I read the reg. it seems there is some wiggle room concerning the list of "included" sites on that list vs obviously designated sites such as those present @ Coyote, Mirror, etc.
