Good morning,

What you will have to do may sound a bit complicated.

Modern Toy dual case adapter plates are designed to be as short as possible. This means that using a forward shifting t/case (where the t/case shifts remotely from the rear of the transmission--like what you have) as the rear (main) t/case is not possible. So in order to put in a dual case unit, you must convert your main t/case--the one where the drive lines will be attached to--to a top shifter (where the t/case shifts directly from the top of itself).
Now you said that you have a couple a t/cases around with different shifting locations. This is good because you will need to use 1 t/case that has its shifter operating from the top (top shifter).

First, you will need to disassemble your top shifting t/case (donor t/case). You will use the front reduction pieces assembling up to the dual case adapter (assuming you order a kit). Now, since your transmission (G52/G54) uses a forward shift t/case--the one you have now--we need to create the dual case unit as a forward shifter since it will be bolted directly behind your transmission. So to do this, we need to swap the forward shift rods from your t/case (4.0:1 geared) and place them in the dual case unit, and use the top shift rods from your donor t/case to place in your main t/case (4.0:1) since it will be behind the dual case adapter plate which can not accept forward shift rods.

Have I lost anyone??  :ack:

In general, you need to have the following:

G52/54 Transmission > Forward shift Unit > top shift t/case.

If you have a top shifting transmission (1979-83; 1985-1988 EFI[4cyl/non-turbo]), then you would have:

L-series or W56 Transmission > Top shift Unit > top shift t/case.

So what you need to do is convert your 4.0:1 box to a top shift, and use its forward shift rods to assemble your dual case unit as a forward shift.

Regards,
BigMike 8)

To be specific :snare:, you have two transfercases. One is a forward shift t/case that contains a low range gear set of 4.0:1, and the other is a top shift t/case core that you will be tearing down to use to assymble a dual case 'Unit'.

Your right, what you want to do is swap the forks and rods between the two. You need to place the forward shift rods/forks in your dual case 'unit', and the top shift rods/forks must go in your t/case that contains your 4.0:1 gears and will have the drivelines bolted to it.

IS IT AS EASY AS JUST SWITCHING THE shift rods and moving the shifter? no paarts needed?

Sorry for the confusion :-[, yes, you have all of the parts needed. It is simply a swap of components from one case with the other. No addition parts are required.

Hope I'm helping ya with this..  :-\

Yes we do. We include a really nice 9 page instruction sheet that Marlin himself hand wrote. It shows drawings, measurements, lengths, and application/model years for all of the various shift rods and where to get the one you need and how to install it all.

Unfortunately A/A seems to enjoy giving us the run around. We were told that we would get them in stock last week, but they delayed their minds another week and we are actually expecting the adapters to come in today.  8)

Give us a call! (559) 252-7295 or come back here later today and I'll let ya know-

If they are in stock, then it will take one day turn around, and it would ship the next.  8)

I have an 82' tranny on my 83, and I'm not sure what the t-case is. If i were to get a t-case that was the same approximate year out of a non turbo, i could do the same thing right, or would they just bolt together? ??? :bull crap:

I have an 82' tranny on my 83, and I'm not sure what the t-case is.

You've got a top-shifting set up.

Here are the top shifting years:
1979-1983 ALL
1985-1988 4CYL, EFI, NORMALLY ASPIRATED

And here are the forward shifting years:
1984-1987 ALL CARB 4CYL
1986-1987 TURBO EFI
1989-1995 ALL 4CYL

So your right, if you get one from a 79-83, then its a topshifting t/case, and its what you would need!

Now this only applies to what ever is connected to your transmission. Of course in ANY dual case application, 1979-2003+, ANY transfercase that is going behind a dual case adapter must be top shifting. This applies to the rear most t/case in a dual case setup, the 2nd crawl box and the rear most t/case in a tripple, the 2nd and 3rd crawl box and the rear most t/case in a quad.. you get it - we are only concerned about what to put BEHIND what TRANSMISSION. Anything going behind an adapter plate must be top shift.

BigMike
