cool!  thanks for all the hard work!

So, the FS still can't get their heads out of the butts on Dusy opening during dry years?  Hell, that one frog they seem to be fixated on will be dead and mummified by Aug 1st.

It's not our Forest Service's fault but rather animal protection agencies taking things waaaaaay too far and putting the animals in front of people.

The President of the Clovis Independents, Mike McGarity, has started a new group on Facebook called "Protect OHV Access" and he has some good info that he has been posting up on the Frogs, take a look here:

well, the FS can try to put up a logical fight on this...and other issues but they don't seem to have the will...or the ideology, IMO.
don't do FB but will try to find the info, thanks

I can't speak for other Forest Services in the make believe severely exaggerated "habitat area", but our local High Sierra Ranger District did indeed do their part by holding multiple Route Designation public hearings 2 and 3 years ago. Marlin and myself attended all of the meetings. I also attended a meeting in Jackson, CA regarding the El Dorado National Forest Service (where the Rubicon Trail is located) (it was a 340 mile round-trip drive). Not sure if you attended these meetings or not, but it was great to see other concerned citizens actually taking time from their busy schedule to stand-up and provide a voice to Forest Service workers. At the end of the day they are public servants and they need feedback from the public too.

Regards,
BigMike

the Sierra bunch seems to be much more reasonable that the dorks we have up here.  No offense to them but this "frog" hysteria is BS, plain and simple.  Off-roading on the established trails in the Shaver area has absolutely no effect on the frogs.  We use such a tiny fraction of the so-called habitat to be statistically insignificant. Now, if these environazi groups want to come up with a cure for the virus that's wiping the frogs out, I'm in to help :D

So, what's the scoop on trail openings?  What's the hold up this late in July in a dry year?
Fresno 4x4 site still has everything listed as closed :(

I can confirm what Zack said, just passed the trail signs yesterday just after noon up near McKinley Grove. Everything is open except for Dusy, which is now 100% ready for it's Aug 1st opening date.

As for our club's website, at the last meeting it was announced that our webmaster is no longer able to work on the site so I volunteered to become the replacement. I have not been given any log-in info yet, but once I get the info I will be making some much needed changes/improvements

Mike didn't take the position after all, Sheryl did. She's cleaned up the site quite a lot, it had been hacked and was a mess. I think info will be current now.

any word from the FS on trail openings this year since the snow is essentially gone?  Are they really going to wait for Aug on Dusy this year?

Yes, they're really gonna wait until August first.  :shake:

That makes absolutely no sense at all.  There is no snow even at 10,000' other than what came down last week.  ...not to mention no water, sheesh.
watch, they'll close the damn thing due to dryness...

I explained to the OHV Manager why it makes no sense a couple years ago. I must of stumped him, because he said the frog experts can explain it better and changed the subject.

Edit: We do have a new OHV Manager starting a couple months ago.

I have yet to see any proof of actual frogs.  Even if there are any in the meadow creek in question we can build a bridge like the one on Dusy creek at the end of Courtright.

The frog issue is just one more ploy in the environmentalist bag of tricks that has slowly shut down trails & restricted access days. These restriction have seemed to increase the trail damage, as it condenses trail use. With higher trail traffic there is a tendency to just power through the tough sections that you might have otherwise taken more time to go through. All the letter writing & meetings with the Forest Service seemed to do little good, but dont give up, just do not vote for liberals. There are way more forest users that environmental Nazis, but until the public quits voting in the liberals, the increasing restrictions will continue.
Save our forest from the sierra club, they are the enemy of outdoor enthusiast everywhere.

I told this to the OHV people we work with a couple years ago, I said all we have are words. They looked stunned. What it boils down to is they think they can't win against the enviro wackos so they give them a little to make them go away. Last year the leader of our clearing group encountered F.S. People on horseback counting frogs at Ershim Meadow. I didn't see them, they were gone when I got there.

hm, seems you were counting... toads...
:p

build a meadow bypass trail or bridge that little creek...problem solved.
Oh, wait...there won't be any water in that creek by July 1, much less Aug 1 so why bother?

We also maintain a list of our local trail open status towards the bottom of our store website. You can bookmark this direct link to instantly load the page with the trails in view: https://www.marlincrawler.com/#trails

If you guys are in the Fresno area then we strongly recommend attending at least one Fresno 4WD Club Meeting. As the Fresno club has been around for now 60-years, it is responsible for most of the trails. Right now is especially a great time to crash a club meeting because this is the season work parties and trail openings are being discussed/planned. You'll get a lot of info about our awesome trails. Meetings are always open to the public (no pressure to join, just hangout with fellow gearheads), and guests are more than welcomed to ask any questions about the forest service, trail use, environmental issues, you name it. Just raise your hand, stand up, and fire out some questions. The collective knowledge of the club is astounding.

The next meeting will be one week from tomorrow, Tuesday the 9th. We try to post monthly details on our Facebook page; Here is info for the 9th: https://www.facebook.com/events/488920344593461/ (time & location posted)

Also we have a photo album for the Fresno 4WD club meetings to give you an idea of what to expect: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152105747417725.1073741859.178624092724

Look for this goof ball on the left. Ice teas on me :beerchug:

Two to three months ago would have been a better time to show up, as you could be a member by now and could go on trail clearing projects with us. I've been a member nine years, and it seems every year someone is upset because themselves or their buddies can't go. We've even had trail chairmen turn away people at the gate because they're not members. The Forest service requires all of our crew to be members, and to have their signature on the club roster each year. So it's not favoritism as some have alleged. We actually need help, and wouldn't turn away people if the proper procedures were followed.
