So I want to install gears in my 1979 Hilux. Iv never installed gears myself, and havent had any installed before. I was wondering wat the process was. Also could i just buy a complete third member w/locker and gears? Im pritty new to mechanics iv done a few jobs. No engine or trans swaps yet nothing nar. Would it be ok to install by self or leave it to a pro? :turtle:

In my opinion this is something you need to have someone do who has experience. Most diff failures seem to be attributed to improper install. If ya think a trans swap is nar then send it somewhere. Tell us where you live and I'm sure someone will have a recommendation

so i could purchase a pre-asembled third choose my gears and locker and then slap it in? or would o still have to have some one install it?

Yep. They will build whatever diff you want. Easy to install. Pull your axles and drop it in   :turtle:

I have a built Grizzly 5.29 from Marlin, and I am running it in the rear of my 1980 with a 20R, a 5 speed and 33s.  Love it.  I am interested in trying the Spartan, but I'd easily by a Grizzly again.  I have to say that more than anything get it from a great builder like Marlin.

Nice :turtle: . Ya I think ima go with the grizzly. :turtle: :driving: :yesnod:

OOPS

What size tires are you going to run? That tells you what gears to go with.

Have you ever had the front-end apart, can be trickey the first time.

I was thinking 33" or maybe 35" but no larger then that. Iv taken it apart most of the way. replaced the inner axle seals, using the camo method. Pulled birfs. But iv never  dropped out a third member.  :headshake::smokin:  :turtle:

if your going with 33s-35s you can get away with 4.88s unless you want the lower gearing of a 5.29. I have 35s now and have put 37s on and driven around with 4.88s wasn't that bad at all but I do have a built 22re  :twocents:
