89 1jzgte mk3 supra w/ r154
« on: Mar 01, 2013, 10:25:29 AM »
hello I'm George.  I have an 89 MK3 Toyota Supra and i'm looking to obtain more info to build my trans to race spec.  we've had multiple supras in the community have issues with the r154's breaking forks, gears ground down.  they all have one thing in common 600 ftlbs of torque or more.   we want to build a more reliable "race spec" R154.  i know stright gears could be an option but that is too much money and might as well go v160 trans.

my current set up:
1jzgte (twin turbo gone Single)
GT4294 1.01 AR @ 30 psi
2 walbro 400lph (e85 fuel pumps)
1200cc injectors
e-85
stage 4 ACT clutch kit
light wieght DM flywheel
Proefi 128 engine management
1zz COP

any further info on race spec R154's or ways to make the r154 for reliable and take the abuse will be appreciated.

no one has any info that may help?  also anyone know where to get an r154 rebuild kit...  kinda looks like people are bailing on the r154 not many place keep those parts in stock or like MC no longer carry them.

Have you contacted Marlin or Bigmike at the store directly?  They build a 2wd transmission that is in a trophy truck.

There is also a wealth of information on these two Supra sites,
Supramania
Supraforums
There are several members between the two running upwards of 500hp 7mgte's and 2jzgte's w/o issue, and one runs 500-750hp(depending on boost) in his daily driver.
The two forums also have a list of venders that should have a way to get you the parts.

i haven't had the pleasure of speaking to him directly (felt like they are busy people and that's what the forum was for) haha.  maybe i'll have a chat with them.  i'm on those forums i'll search around on there.

the few guys local to me in phoenix have gone thru 2 transmissions each.  They have just completely rebuilt (stock replacement parts) hoping to outlast the previous trans.

I would send them an email, probably get more information on specs than over the phone, the store can get busy.

Driftmotion carries the Marlin 1 and 2 forks, if those are the ones that are wearing, they also have 3 and 4 available, but if they are wearing those down they must be doing something wrong.

If they are going through rebuilt trans, I would find a new shop to rebuild the next ones.

I know one of the old members on Supramania( IIRC, his name was IJ, and he was from Australia) ended up going to an automatic trans with his MKIII, I think he was in the 600hp range.  I can't remember if he started out w/an 7mgte or a 7mge.

You might also try contacting http://www.supratrucks.com, and see what they are doing.

Here's one of our members who's doing desert racing with a Marlin custom built trans.  With some video IIRC.
