I am a complete noob about axle and differential differences outside of what I have owned.
I am *hoping to* pick up an 83 pickup soon that needs a front diff and my 88 xtracab will become a donor.

besides the transfer case, what am I looking at as far as compatibility?

will my rear diff fit in the front of the 83 until I can get an appropriate locker?
I just want it to work so I can play with my new toy, ya know?  8)

as far as I know it's an 8" standard diff. but was there any variation between any of them? *assuming* the 83 has stock gears, I just want to know if that's going to work.
input, go!

it will work but make sure the gears are the same

I just re-read the description.
the 83 has a V6 3rd in the rear. so will the 4cyl in front be the same gearing? something tells me if the front diff is blown that they are different, and they left the front stock so it blew up... either that or someone left 1 hub locked on the drive home.
