What does your rig weigh?
« on: Mar 03, 2005, 03:58:13 PM »
Was wondering what everybodies Toyota weighs. I'm thinking of building a truggy. Due to rusty frame problems. And wondered how easy it would be to build it to weigh around 3,500 lbs. without too much getting cut off. I still want it to look like a Toyota. Not just a buggy with some sheetmetal.

Plans so far include: Toyota axles, frame cut off behind cab, Minimal tubing out back (just got to make it strong still), 4 link with TJ coils, For now 36" tsl's, Maybee duals. But more than likely 4.7's in 1 case, Interior cage. rears up front. etc. etc.

MiniSimp: what year is your truck. I had an 83 shortbed that I swapped the rears up front. And ran Chevies in the rear with 33" AT tires. Weighed it at the truck scale down the road. And it was exactly 3,080 lbs. 100 lbs. lighter than my bro's CJUNK5 that's cut up and caged.

EDIT: That could've been the scale I used also. It's old, and open for public use. I guess so that the farmers can weigh themselves when thier loaded down with corn and grain.

I don't remember for sure, but my 81' Shortbed is right around 2,900 or 3k with a tripple crawler and no bumpers.

Tim's '83 truck (TURBO) I think weighed 3600 with bumpers all around and a MASSIVE Tripple roll bar. I remember my truck was nearly 1/2 ton lighter than his.

It's easy for me to get my truck weighed right down the street from the shop, so I'll see what it is now with the bigger tires. Might be closer to 3100 now

Maybee that truck scale by my house really isn't that far off. Glad to know that. Cause I use it quite a bit. I never weighed my 86 before I tore into it. But, I'm guessing it weighed around 3k-3200. Now, I have to decide to either fix/build the 86. Or, build the 87 2wd that was given to me. Nice truck, just has a blown engine. Either way, It seems to be the same amount of work. What would you guys do?

Maybe you could fix both.  Just put enough cash into the 2WD to get it runnin and have a reliable daily driver.  Then pour some more money into your 86 to make it a hardcore trail rig.  Best of both worlds, since you already got 2 trucks.  Just do what your budget allows.  As a wise man once said, "Let your budget be your guide."

To me it would be easier to just use the "GOOD STUFF" from the 2wd. Cab, bed and a few engine goodies. Just to get me going for my gangs Easter run, I'll just throw the cab and stuff onto the 83 running gear that I have. It's already got the rears up front, hysteer, and those crappy 63 inchers in the rear. Plus, I think that fabbing up some different body mounts would be easier than a SAS, and tranny T-case stuff. Meanwhile, I'll turn the 2wd frame into a 4x4. Be a lot easier (not to mention better looking fab work) if I do that while the cab is off. I also think that my 86 is just gonna get parted out. The frame is just too far gone. I was welding in some plate to fix it last night. And it was like welding in 1/8 inch plate to a soda can. Even at 40 amps on my stick welder I was blowing holes in it!!!

Weldo: budget, what budget I wish I had one. Kinda hard to do with no money. But that's another story.

OK, I got a chance to get my baby back on the scales, and with the Tripple Cases and 35" treads, its 3,150 lbs.

No bumpers though.. I hope I can keep it as light as possible once I finish building it.

I'm still trying to find a place in my county that will do it for me.  I need to pack it up completely and take 3 weights, total, front axle and rear axle, for Alcan.

#1 Go to the dumps, and pull up to the kiosk and ask what you weigh.  #2 I used to work for a juice manufacturer and they have a certified scale, at the Watsonville side of Freedom Blvd.  H.A. Rider & Sons, cost like 5 or 10 bucks to get the scale ticket.
