I got this message from Bebe on pirate. Not sure what they will be doing, but keep an ete out.  FYI....

I'm just glad the word is out on the drain plugs and that the EDCO/OHMVR tour is scheduled before you all roll in

Please be super careful Friday AM - they will have a delegation out on the trail - Represent Responsible OHV use on the Rubicon.

And - while I'm on a Roll...

Can some please spread the word about FOTR Work Days??

If everyone on the MC Crawler Run gave FOTR 1 weekend a year, we wouldn't have to beg for help. (We shouldn't have to beg for help).

1 weekend a year to help maintain the Trail - that's all I'm asking.

Thanks,

Bebe

What is the deal on the drain plugs?  I read it earlier on another board but it just sounded like they were getting pulled/spun out of diffs.  I am bringing 4 extra just in case cuz it seemed like a big deal.

As with any trail where axles/difs drag on rocks, the Rubicon has a tendancy to spin stock plugs loose with the obvious consequences. I run Marlin's low profile plugs and haven't had much of a problem since. For those with stock plugs, don't rely on spares (though they are worth having because rocks like to eat up the corners), just check your drain plugs every couple miles to prevent gear oil spills (and just in case, carry oil split kits  ).

As for what Jacquelyne (Bebe) is talking about in terms of Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) work days, it would be great if the following weekend (Sept 22nd) some MCR participants (or any of us for that matter) could help with the FOTR's work day that weekend. I am trying to get up there myself to help out with the necessary trail repairs if I can get a 4WD ride (push comes to shove I will drive the Crown Vic up to the trailhead and hop on the first available seat).

Here is the PBB post about the upcoming FOTR work day:

Something I've done with my drain plugs is fill the surrounding area of the drain plug with silicone and partially cover the drain plug. This way, if it get loosened by a rock it won't just back out all by itself. The cured silicone with prevent it from working out of the diff. It may leak slightly, but then all you do is tighten it.  I haven't lost one yet. 8) I'm also using Marlin's low profile drain plugs with the Allen center so the silicone isn't an issue for removal either.

Got it. Kinda what I thought and will be sure to tighten em up every chance I get. Thanks for the heads up.

That is a great idea!

Superyota,

Thank you very much for posting this. At the Cantina for the Con I spoke to both Joshua Bernadas and Brian Robertson from the Department of Parks and Recreation but forgot to get this posted.

Here is the Official News Release for this event:

Tour of Rubicon Trail
September 14-15, 2012

The public is invited to join the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Commission on Friday, September 14, 2012, for a tour of the historic Rubicon Trail. The tour will provide the Commission, guests, and the public a general overview of this world famous off-highway vehicle (OHV) route.

...

The OHMVR Commission consists of nine members appointed by the Governor, Senate Committee on Rules, and the Speaker of the Assembly. The Commissioners are responsible for hearing the concerns and issues of the public related to off-highway vehicle recreation in California and for providing input and recommendations for improving the California State Parks OHMVR Program.

Yes, please show extra courtesy towards your fellow wheeler and if you see trash anywhere then stop and pick it up!

I forgot to add that the group will be traveling into the Sluice Box area for lunch, and then will turn around to head back out the same day.

I welded my drain plugs in.  then just pull a stud near the bottom and it drains or the whole third if you are doing more work in there.

BigMike

Cruzila informed me that the Tour went very well but I don't have any of the details. Did anyone happen to see them on the trail?

Thanks
Mike

I gotta say, we had a very pleasant visit with one of the officials in charge of traffic control. Everyone we encountered with their group was friendly, and they seemed to be having a good time
