If anything, try finding your answers here. There's a lot of good info for the majority of the questions you may have.  :yesnod:

WOW!! Just did a registration fee calculation for a Nonresident Vehicle and it came up to 550 bucks for my F250! It's 70 bucks and a 15 dollar safety inspection here in Tx
The 4runner came up to 181 bucks. That's a little easier to swallow.

Is that what it'll cost every year?
If so i think the Ford will be getting sold before moving, and just DD the 4runner till i can find a cheap DD there.

I'm gonna say, yes, only because it is so new and for its weight. When you consider that I pay over 1/3 that for my 78 chevy 1/2T. Just be glad it isn't a newer Dually. Those can be well over 1K to register. Even my '05 Chevy Tahoe is still around $260 every year.

ajordan1975

Looks like if I move there It'll be without my F250. That's just way to much to pay yearly for registration.
If I was to go the camper shell route would I be able to tow my 4runner on a trailer or will you not be able to haul anything?

I would have to say you'd be safe to tow with a shell on since, aside from tow capacity, there's no limits on towing with an enclosed SUV I think that same thinking would have to apply here as well.

If you weld in some seats and seatbelts  (like a subaru brat), you could probably get away with non-commercial plates without the shell...........

Well guess its settled. Camper shell for the F250. Guess that's why I seen so many trucks w/ camper shells when I was up there last.

What's it cost to register with a shell? Do you need anything other than just a shell to register as a pass. Car?

ajordan1975

I just entered that it was an automobile w/ a diesel motor. Not really sure what else is needed to register it other then a camper shell.
It came up to be cheaper then the 4runner at 171 dollars. I like that total a lot more then 550!

WOW!  :suprised:  That's a significant difference in cost!   Well, if that works out for you, let us know what all is required to get that registered as a car. Not that I would go that route with my trucks, but I always like to know stuff like that.  8)

ajordan1975

I just find it pretty stupid that you have to reg your own personal pickup as a commercial vehicle. Makes no sense to me.

I've always felt that it's the state's way of taxing you for a vehicle that could be making you money for the fact that you can Haul things and get paid without them ever knowing. This way they aren't cheated out of their cut of what you made from those hauls. Otherwise, yeah, it's BS!

If you really don't want the shell,

We'll break your kneecaps so you can get handicapped plates...........

Would ya please!

The more I think about the more the 4runner starting to pull DD duties sounds better and better. Love having a tow rig, but I haven't always had one...
Guess we will just have to see when that day comes.
