i have a CB radio i got dumpster diving a few years back( jc penny brand i think). it powers on and looks alright for a free one. i wanted to know what kind of antenna to get and how much they run about? thanks

magnetic or permanent mount?

I'd suggest a permanent mount wilson 1000 on the roof of your rig.  A roof mounted antenna has always worked best for me.  I run a fibreglass wilson antenna on a permanent mount on the left bed rail of my truck.  It gets out OK, SWR's hover around 2 right now, and is adequate for trail useage.

For a magnetic mount, I'd suggest a radio shack special.  They're cheap and hard to beat.

Get like a 4' Wilson Flex Fiberglass Permanent mount antenna. Only $23 and it doesn't need a spring because its super flexy and will bend and not break. Mine's working really great!

Little late on the reply, but this i will put in my 2 cents:

Get a 102" steel whip and mount it on your roof.  I recommend a Dave Made mount (requires drilling).  If not, make some sort of tab that mounts behind your cab on the edge of your bed.   A stainless steel spring also helps.  A Huskey QD-2 (heavy-duty quick disconnect) is also nice.

A steel whip along with a spring can go horizontal and beyond.  So driving under/ through heavy brush will not be an issue.  Plus, the steel whip is cheap, and will give better performance than any magmount antenna out there.

With the mentioned quick disconnect, it doubles up a a good gauge to see how deep a mud pit really is...

Hey Ryan try running a short wire from a bolt on you antenna mount to the frame of your truck.. that will help ground out the circut, plus move the antenna back. I run my coax under the bed along the frame rails( up in inside to protect) and then up through the stack hole in the bed. I run a 10 gauge or large wire from the antenna mount back through the hole to a bolt on the frame. Flat match from 1.8 to 30 MHz.

RAZOR

I have a cobra NW ST WX with all the hop ups and goodies inside of it. I first had the Wilson little WILL. It worked Great, YOu can go 100 MPH and won't come off, Did a moderate wheelin trip and did come off how ever did move a little bit. I then had a firestik, Was really stiff and heavy. I had it on for 3 or 4 wheelin trips without a spring at the time and broke in 2 pieces going through some trees up here in WA. Then i did my research and actually found a Wilson (best known for Antenna's) 4' fiberglass antenna. Not only is it SWR tunable, Super flexy and skinier, but it gets great reception, and can handle my 25 watts of power i put out and avcourse, hasn't broken yet. So my advice to You, Get the Fiberglass antenna, It's a true 4x4 type antenna. The magnet ones can sometimes move around or get pushed off by some of those trees.
