Ok I bought this cb for my rig at a yard sale for $12, what else do I need and how do i hook it up?? Thanks...

See you at the Timberline!

Dr Phat

Looks like you'll need a mic that will connect to that pin set up, some antenna cable (Radio Shack or West Marine), an antenna, a mount for the antenna, and a quick lesson on how to tune the CB with a tuner. (Borrow from a friend or they are cheap enough)

jrock

And a fuse :) Thats a score for $12 if it works.

Ah yes a fuse too! Haha.

TimberlineBryce

Ok thanks guys I'll hit radio shack, but what's up with the wiring job is that correct?? Is that an aftermarket plug in te back? ???

You can eliminate all but the main bracket that actually holds the radio.  Monk can help you for sure.  That was a old school anti theft setup for radios back in the day.  Just a quick pull and it would all pop right out.   Radio Shack might have a power plug for that too.  Just take it in, and maybe they will have everything you need.  And that is a old school radio right there.  It's been forever since I've seen one that only went to channel 23.  I remember some that only went to 12 channels.

So when properly set up what is the range on these things?

depending on your antenna but it will be good for the trails.

Dr Phat

Generally line of sight only or a few 2-5 miles through woods and stuff.

Or you can get an amp for it....but that would be unethical...and illegal...and stuff...but totally doable...but illegal.

TimberlineBryce

Lol ok I was worried because my buddy said don't waste time with cb just go marine radio and the cb is useless in the woods... :/

Around here. Most are using cb. Ham would be best but not to many locals I know use it. Heck not to many use cb as well. Sucks cuz it makes it easy to talk to each other when needed

Cheesemaker

Marine radios run on VHF frequency, and majority of people run CB's which is a different frequency range.  95% of everybody is running a CB, not a VHF or UHF radio.  But a UHF radio in a group of wheelers is very helpful, cause most can reach out where cell phones won't.

CB frequency range  26.965 MHz-27.405 MHz
Very high frequency (VHF) is the radio frequency range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz.
Ultra-high frequency (UHF) designates the ITU radio frequency range of electromagnetic waves between 300 MHz and 3 GHz (3000 MHz)

it really depends on who you go wheeling with and what they use.

TimberlineBryce

Ok thanks you guys good info!

Might be a good idea to find a local cb guy and have him take it apart and make sure everything's good. Maybe juice it up, that's illegal but makes it great for wheeling and you don't need an amp. I've been sitting in a clearing on a local trail and was taking to a guy in a town about 30-40 miles away

In Fresno, I use red monkey.

spoolnaround

Get a decent antenna.  Wilson 100 is a decent antenna and has the cable with it.  You can get a magnetic mount or hard mount as well.  Take it to a CB shop and have them tune it.

spoolnaround

if you remove the quick mount the connector that plugs into the back of the radio is all you need.  Undo the black electrical tape and connect your positive and ground to that plug.  If you need a bracket Red Monkey can get it for you.

TimberlineBryce

Thanks for the info, I still haven't messed with it yet...
