Microsoft Announces Windows 8 On The Cheap...
« on: Jul 17, 2012, 01:08:14 AM »
Microsoft intends to almost give away their new system for just about 2 twenty dollars bills through 2012, if you already have a Windows operating system from XP on up you can get it and for those still using XP or got stuck with Vista (like me on both counts) it may be something to think about.

Will my Office 2000 still work like it does with Windows 7?

Yeah I was wondering the same thing, they also announced the release of a new Office. Would be one of the hicups if I can't run my older software. You were supposed to be able to run older programs on Vista but I've had several issues or should I say denials in being able to run them. I was able to run my older Office on Vista but not very many non-microsoft programs.

I was so looking forward to Vista that and the timed death of my Me made it to where I got Vista on week one. I can't tell you how many times I have had to do a complete clean reinstall of Vista. Right now I have XP, Vista and 7 on several different machines and still like XP over any.

From what I gather as long as you have the software installed in Windows 7, you should be able to retain it. I'm not a big fan of upgrading straight through Windows though, fresh install is normally in order for me.

It's interesting that the article specifically states the pro upgrade is for LAPTOPS but that makes zero sense. And the 70 dollar disk is a joke considering the downloaded option normally nets you an ISO file in the first place. You could burn it to a dvd for free and save yourself 30 bucks. If Microsoft continues to simply modify the Vista kernel like they did for 7, all 8 will be is a somewhat new look and feel. Kind of like Painting your rig and throwing some new shocks on.

Windows 8 is built on the same core as windows 7 is so that part should be stable and you programs should work.

That being said however, they have completely redesigned the GUI to look more like a dashboard for mobile devices and an X-box, and less like a normal desktop environment.  Those of us use to task centric OS's will have Lot's of frustrating time ahead.

Oh wonderful. The XBOX 360 and Windows phone GUI's are so conducive to getting actual work done. Haha.

This is correct, looks like they are trying to change the way people use computers again. Seems like a big gamble to me...

This price is pretty dang sweet to be honest. I am still running XP on all my systems, even despite having purchased a copy of Windows 7. Now I'll have to decide to migrate to 7 or 8. I'll probably purchase the 8 upgrade but keep it on stand by for whenever its needed

Vista has been fairly stable for me ( with lots of preventative maintenance ). That being said, Adobe programs do not play well with Vista as compared to XP. I will probably go for it on one machine & see how it fares.
