1st and 2nd gear are tight.

when starting to run in the morning, 1st gear is tight when shifting to 2nd. on the 2nd gear, it does not go in too. i had to go 3rd @ 20 mph. after about 1/2 mile, 1st is ok and goes in to 2nd normally.
what is wrong w/ it? rig is '85 toy 4x4 carbed. tranny was rebuilt about 25k-30k miles ago.

thats what i was going to say,   drain that oil,   put a couple qts of deisel fuel in it  spin a jacket up tire for just a few seconds then drain flush with motor oil then fill with fresh 80-90

or you can just make sure it has some 80-90 in it    my old L43 leaked and i always knew it was low when it got hard to shift

rebuilt by a friend who was a mechanic in '96. oil is 2 weeks old 80-90 when i disassembled it to fix the reverse. before that, i say it's a year old w/ 5k miles max. reverse lost in beginning of february, dropped the tranny, remove the front and rear cases and saw the reverse gear wobbling coz the sleeve in between the gear and the shaft came off. then reassembled it, filled it w/ 80-90.

Well, it may or may not be a problem. I know that some trans that Marlin rebuilds can take about that long to fully break in.

I've taken calls from customers who have rebuilt trans from Marlin and are still tight after 4-5 months. Marlin has us tell the customers that some times it may take a while for the trans to loosen up, and regardless if it does not doesnt, we have a 1-year unlimited warranty so Marlin just tells the customer to continue driving it. If it doesnt feel any better, then we will send out another one and exchange it. And most of the time the customers never call back -- so I hope that means that their units broke in properly and that they are happy

is 70k miles too long for the gears? this rig puts in only 3-4k miles/year from '92-'03. put in a lot last year for that "WORTHLESS" job.

At 6-9 months, that's 8,000-12,000 miles a month, or like 140,000 miles a year. Do you commute nationally or something?

If it just started to tighten up, then its got a problem and needs to be inspected..

The scenario I was talking about was from a tranny that starts out tight and then becomes loose. If yours started out ok and then later tightened up, then there is something wrong..
