i want to remove my carrier to weld my spiders, can i just pull the carrier out, weld without removing the ring gear, and throw it back in without worrying about the backlash and what not? can i even remove the ring gear and reinstall it?

Search the forum , I think you just pull the 3rd  weld it up
No having to pull apart!

Rockdiver

What are you using to weld it with ?  Stick or wire feed?   You should be able to pull the carrier and weld the spiders while in the carrier . Some people just weld the spiders in the corners both sides if you can . I like the plate way with a small plate that fits inside the spiders and weld all the way around. Make sure to clean the gear oil out to get a clean weld then clean out any flux or slag  when done welding.

i welded mine without taking the carrier out.  you just need to pull the 3rd out of the housing and you can weld it like that.  I also put in two pieces of 1/4" plate like Rockdiver suggested and i havnt had any poblems

Like mentioned above be sure no gear oil is left when you weld or flames will occur

i read that article about the chlorinated cleaners, thats scary stuff. im pulling my 3.90's out for 4.56's and i was considering using 2 extra spiders in the 4.56s instead of the steel plate. wont need the 3.90 thirds untill i get gears tires and real lockers. ill likely be welding with MIG from my buddies work.

The spider gears are of a hardened steel, which will prob break after welding. Steel plates are just mild steel and wont.

I like to tear it all apart and clean it up before welding.  It's nice to have the ring gear out of the way.  It helps keep slag out of the recesses of the diff.  You can do a better job of it if you do.  Setting backlach is not big deal and can be done with a cheap dial indicator.  Probably not a big deal but that's how I like to do it and I haven't had any break that way.
