broken weld in rear end
« on: May 23, 2012, 06:01:06 PM »
So i broke the weld in my ring and pinion in my 87 4runner and drove it home last night 1 tire firing. I need to drive it to work for a couple more days before i can weld it back up. Is it ok to drive with a broken weld like that or will it screw up the ring and pinion and i will have to buy new?

what weld?

your ring and pinion srent welded together......

if you are talking that you run a welded up rear end, then your spider gears are welded together.....

fix it soon, if you don't you are at risk for little chunks of weld eating other things, if it gets bad enough, the whole housing will be junk as well as the internals.....

Only need to buy a new R&P if it was damaged by metal, you will know when you pull it apart

I would probably guess you broke or striped a axle shaft unless it was welded very very poorly. Because usually the weld will penetrate enough that even if 1 side breaks of the spider gear the other side is still attached or the gears are to screwed up to turn.
