fj80 high pinion install

currently i have a 80 pickup with a the stock 4cl housing with 5.29's and a LSD. i just picked up a FJ80 8" high pinion open diff at the pick a part. what do i need to do to make to install this? do i need new gears and locker? or can i use my old ones that are in good condition? thanks for the help- steve

It will bolt right in as is. If you want to change the gears you have to use reverse cut HP gears. You can't use your old gears in the HP housing. Also for front use only.

gotcha. new gears and bearings. BUT i can use my old locker?

HP will only take a v6 locker.

I went through the same thing....my detroit locker and yukon 5.29's had to be replaced.

Depends what your locker is. You might be able to get special bearings and still use it. Just like putting a 4cyl locker in a v6 third

a little late but you can use a 4cyl lunch box locker into FJ80 8" HP carrier. the HP carrier look like the 4 cyl carrier except the carrier bearing are larger than the 4cyl. any other type of locker need to be v6 to use in hp third
