Hello all,
New to here and Toyotas but definetly not to wheelin. I've owned several Jeeps (I know I know) with my current one being a 99 TJ locked on 36's. Anyhow I'm pickin up my first Yota tomorrow. An 86 4runner with a 22re, with the auto tranny and chain drive xfer case. Body is straight though and it's just what I was lookin for except for the tranny and xfer case. That's my question...

What are my options for tranny swap and how hard is it? I've been and still am searchin. I want to know the best setup for running dual cases and such. I'm also trying to do this in a budget minded fashion... :dunno:

Tell  me who makes what, what works and what to avoid and please help the Toy Newbie out.

Oh, yea. This all happens before the SAS kit so I need to get busy....

Thanks in advance.

   :welcome:
You asked about stuff to get and avoid.  Here is my  :twocents:

Stuff to get-
Marlin Crawler- Leaf springs, shackles, Mc07 with 4.7 gears, Detriot Locker front, Knuckle service kit if needed, and Marlins Bellfield Joint.
R151f Turbo Manual Transmission- If possible
E-Locker out of a Tacoma- This came as a factory option from Toyota don't pay more than $400
5.29 gears Randy's Ring and Pinion

Stuff to avoid
Wormgear gears
All pro springs -They're made in Mexico and very cheaply crafted.
5.71 gears ring and pinion

Oh ya I almost forgot, you'll need Marlins SAS kit or at least their spring hanger kit.  Your also going to have to ditch that automatic transmission and go with a manual transmission and a gear driven transfer case (preferably top shift for dual t-cases).

Your cheapest solution for a trans swap is to buy a totalled rig and strip all the clutch lines and parts off of it and sell the remains.  That or pony up at the wrecking yard for the complete setup.  Its a very straightforward swap.  Many of us on here have done that swap multiple times so if you run into any snags feel free to ask.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Was hoping to get around buying a whole other vehicle just to swap trannys but oh well.  Considering just swapping in a 4.3 vortec and a 700r4 as well. Alot of different ways to go with this rig. I'm building it to be a long range camping vehicle that will get me the wife and kid wherever we want to go. It doesn't have to be full on Comp ready but at least functional enough to run most sane trails.
