1983 22R/20R Hybrid
« on: Mar 15, 2012, 12:16:54 PM »
I know i'm new to the here but don't give me to much crap about it ;) I'm just looking for other people's opinion's on this. I'm running a 1983 Yota with a 22R that has a 20R head, small cam and a weber carb. It smoke's like a freight train so it's time to rebuild it. I'm gonna be running 37" bogger's with 4.10's. I will be doing a mixture of trail riding, crawling and running in the deep snow. Should I bore it out any? If so how much? :usa:

You should buy 5.29 gears and just rebuild it as normal as possible.  No amount of boreing will make up for 37s and 4.10s...

it will help a LOT but are you driving this on the highway at all?? I run dual 2.28's and 5.29's with 35 PitBull's and I couldnt imagine running with 4.10's It would be such a gutless rig it would be ridiculous.

anyway.  its smokes.  have you run a compression test??   this will tell you if you need new valve seals or if you need new rings or both.

No it'll be a trail only truck.

Not yet I haven't. Figured might as well just rebuild it while I have it tore down.

Right now it is just a stock 22R. I will be putting the 20R head on it after I put new rocker arm's, valve spring's and seal's if it needs it.

Nothing wrong with building the hybrid, I plan to do it myself.  I guess the point that we are all trying to make though is that is doesn't matter how much you throw at your engine, if you don't have the proper gearing for your tire size the thing will be a gutless turd anyway.  A hot engine is great, but if you want to enjoy it regear too...

Yeah I know what point your trying to make and I understand it. Just thought about boring it while I had it took apart. I'm doing what I can as I can afford them. Going with the dual 2.28 cases because it is cheaper and you get lower gearing that just using a single 4.7 case. 5.29's are going to be put in after I tear down the motor and get that problem fixed first. Only reason i'm running the 37's is because I got a pretty good deal on them(37x13R15 with 80% tread with wheels for $600)

:eyecrazy:  that was a GREAT deal

find a good machine shop. like who the local racers (dirt track, drag) use and take your block and crank to them. and have them do whats NEEDED.  you might not need but .010 over bore.  just dont have it bored over .040 because after that pistons get very expensive. like $100 EACH instead of $80 a set.
you can more than likely use the rockers in your current engine but have the wear pads refurbished.

Good advise there, That is what I would do. I am gonna be building a 22r/20r hybrid myself soon, gonna try and run it with a chevy TBI unit on it.

Here is my junk that i'm working on. I know it need's alot of work but it does have 63" chevy springs in the rear, not sure what it has in the front. Guy I got it from said it was a 1983 but you can tell by the body style it isn't, I think he meant 84.

looks like rear spring up front.  very flat rear springs I might add :ack:

yea those round ubolts need to go before you kill yourself but when you get the motor in we can walk you through getting it safe and functional.

OH, look at the drivers door jamb and see what the "Manufactured date" is.
anything after 8-83 would have been the "new body style" for 84.

Okay I didn't know what the one's up front was. I still got a little bit of time in afghanistan before i'll be home to actually work on it. They look like Chevy 63" springs in the back but i'm gonna replace them with different 63"s

It looks like a great rig that just needs a little.... a lot of TLC.. Nothing wrong with that makes for good times. FYI i think  your front boomerang shackles are upside down. looks like if you flipped them they would clear body mounts.

Yeah it's gonna some TLC but i'll get it. Thought about even swapping that cab out for an ext cab. Their is plans for a 3 link front and 4 link rear in the future. I will not be running the bed that's on it I am making my own. Hope to make my own bumper's and rock slider's also.
