Stock Spare Tire Mount
« on: Feb 19, 2005, 07:22:35 PM »
Alright, this may seem like a stupid question, but I've only had my Toyota for a few months, and the condition it's in now is the only way I've ever known it, so I'm still learning how all the stock stuff works, ya know, engine, suspension, and what not.  So my question is, How does the spare tire carrier work?  I know where its at, under the bed, but its all rusted tight.  I see a chain, but i don't see how to lower the chain to fit a tire.  The previous owner said the mount was broken.  He never fixed it, but I can weld so I could, but it doesn't appear to be broken, just seized or something.  Any advice?  Thanks, and pardon my ignorance! :hammerhead:

at the back of the bed above where the tag goes there is a hole that looks kind like this <0>. In the tool bag there is a roll up too set with 4 brown rods that connect together  on the end of one there is a hook looking end. Put the hook looking end into that hole, all the way up to where the winch for the tire is and turn it until the tire lowers down.

Does that help?

I think I see what you're talkin' about.  But I don't think I have the tool.  Is it possible You have a picture of the tool so I could perhaps make one?   Thanks a lot!

Hey Weldo, I don't have access to a photo right now but if you go to ebay and type in "toyota tire tool", it will come up with some examples.  there are two or three parts to the tire crank, depending what type of toy you have.  If you do look at the ones  on ebay ignore the lug wrench.  the other rods are the tool.

Any chance I could get a pic of the mount?  I'm told the chain is broken, but i see a chain hangin there.  It's attached on each end, so it's hangin in a U shape.  My mom's minivan has a similar mount I think.  You turn a crank in the floor to lower a spare from a plate attached to a cable.  I dunno if I'm missin a plate or what.  Thanks for the help so far!

Just get a 1/2" steel rod weld two 1/2" pieces at one end in a T and a 1/2" nut on the other end and you got it.
