Lots of issues about ideling! Plz help
« on: Dec 10, 2011, 09:52:53 AM »
20r totally stock does everything but idel... other wise runs perfectly. Now the carb has been rebuilt put another fuel pump on as well as new fuel lines. Still can't. Get the truck to idel smouth at a normal rpm i have the idel screw pretty much maxed out just to get it to run and usually if it stays running it will runn very lopie or rough and surge or sometimes it will just decide to idel high like it should for. How far the idle screw. Is turned in but i try to turn it down and get it right but never happens...  i had the egr port in the intake manifold was clogedgot that all cleaned and working agin with no results so i blocked it off agin. Have searched every hose for leaks foynd none also pulled out the manual and checked to see that all vaccumm lines were ran corect. I am pretty mich totally stumped here any advise would be super helpe full

I had a bad ignitor that wouldn't let me idle on my 20r once.

On the driverside where the coil is.. the ignitor should be mounted on the wall next to the fender.. pretty much right be hind the coil.. it should be labeled ignitor across it.. if you need one i have one i can sell you for cheap.

That is the voltage regulator for the charging system. The coil and igniter are bolted together and right next to the voltage regulator in your pic. Normally When the igniter goes it won't run at all. Is it running ritch at all? How does it run besides the idle problem?

Man it runs like stright fire... runs very hard for the orginal motor never had the head off lol bought it from orgi.al owner about 6months ago. And yes circled in the pic it a voltage regulator and also the pic from an engine bay of an 82 i think? Maybe wrong. But just guesing cuse mine has a round coil pack with the ignitor bolted to the top. But on another note was having voltage regulator problems last night so ordered a new one from carquest. Sond be here at 2 some reason i doubt that will fix my ideling issues but it needs a new 1. So any more advise withh be help full

Maybe just rebuild the carb too.  I did mine and it helped ALOT with idling, running, starting etc.

Oh yeah I see that above, sorry...

This is one of those stupid things, but a few weeks ago while wheeling to feed some horses my truck died and barely idled at all when I restarted it.  My gas pedal went limp.  The throttle cable housing had slipped out of the tab on the top of the valve cover where the barrel adjuster with the two nuts is.  The carb is adjusted by the book and idles fine but still would not idle without the tiny bit of preload on the throttle cable.  When I quikely put it back in the idle was way high because I had the barrel adjuster off a bit...  I later adjusted it back down.

Which leads me to my suggestion: You can do alot of adjustment to idle by backing up the nuts on that cable housing adjuster.  Maybe if you put a bit more preload on the throttle cable there  you could get your carb adjustments to make sense.

If it's not the ignitor or the pickup in the distributor or ignition related and your fuel cut thingy is working right then it may be something just that stupid.
Have you changed the fuel filter?  That's another small dumb thing that has caused crummy idle for me in the past.

Haha it koo man no worries and I FINALLY FIGURE IT OUT! Everything works the problem is the primarly fuel cut dosen't seem to be getting power from the harness? I am guessing this because i ran jumper wire fromthe battrie to that slinoid and bang she ideled good and smouth and low for once but how to find out y its not getting power the wires all look fine with all the little pegs in the conectoors????
Also would it be ok to give that primary fuel cut a constant power source or what cant think what would control that little thing
