Transmission humming

I have a 91 toyota ex cab 22re with i believe to b w 56 tranny, the transmission recently started whinning quite loud in 1,2,3,5 gears, 4th gear is quiet and does not make a sound. Does any one know what is going on in there to cause it to hum or whine in those gears except 4th?

Time for a rebuild.......

One or more bearings are worn out.

No noise in 4th because there isn't any load on the counter-shaft in 4th.

kind of what i was thinking too, thank you for the input.. Are those trannys hard to over haul?

How mechanically inclined are you?

I am prety well mechanically inclined, built my yota from ground up and its fully built. Always been intimidated with pulling a tranny apart though.

l52 isnt anything like a w56 lol..  i mean they both have gears and shafts in them but thats about as similar as they get
