Just guessing, but it looks like that would be where an abs sensor would mount.  Just a n idea.

   I hate to be the party-pooper here, but that doesn't look like a Toy diff, check the case, it might be from a nissan or rover or something...

CTENG could be right.  Were it mounts to the axle, it looks a lot thicker then the toyota thirds.

I just put some 5.29s in a third that has that same hole in the top.  If its the same one than its a v6 third.  I dont know what the hole is for.  Its out of a 90s truck.
