'88 3.0 4x4 5sp trans ?????????????????

I have an '88 toyota pickup 4x4 with the 3.0 v6 and a 5 manual trans. Transmission is shot, no 1st or 2nd gear. I'v got a great deal on a trany from an '89 pickup. Local trans shop and dealer are telling me that they are not compatable. What is the diff. between the '88 r150 tran and the '89? Will it work, if so what mods do i need to make, or is there a better year that will work? Local trany shop has quoted m $1700 to rebuild my old trany, only if they don't have to replace any gears.

If the 89 trans is out of a rig with a 3.0 they are full of .  But if the trans is a W-56 they are correct.

I got the trans and 3.0, in a basket, for $200.

I cant understand why they would say that it wont work since all of them shoucl work.  Even a R151F from a turbo 4 cyl will work if you use your bellhousing and do a little bit of grinder work.  Its not a big deal really.  Id just put the trans in yourself and then drive it to the stealership and stop by the trans shop to let them know that they were right it they couldnt do it.  Thats why you did it yourself.
