Hello everyone . just wondering how difficult it is to swap a g54 transmission for a R151F . I have a 1986 hilux extra cab. it is stock with a carburated 22r and 31x10.5 tires . The g54 tramsmission has 158k and the countershaft bearings are making alot of noise in all gears except 4th . I realize i need a rebuild and would like to put in a stronger transmission in . would the cost be alot more ? do i need different length drive shaft ? will i need to cut metal to fit the shifters?   any advice would be appreciated . Thanks .    :turtle2: :turtle2:

i do believe depending on which R151F you get, you might need to change the bell housing...other than that the swap just unbolting bolts and bolting em back on

If all i need is to change the bellhousing ,that would be great . Thanks for the input .  :turtle2: :turtle2:

Your shifters may be in a different spot.

I swapped an R151F in place of my W56 in my 88 and it pretty much bolted in. The plugs on the switches were different but, the switches swapped over from one trans to the other.

I used the same clutch and throw out bearing.

The shifters were the only thing that needed a little work. My W56 had a top shift T-case and the R151F had a forward shift. Worked out good because I combined the two to make a Toyota twin stick setup.

The R151F and the W56 are the same overall length so everything bolted right in. Not sure of the G54 dimensions though.

Where did you find the r151f transmission?

Dave C

Well  I can tell you , after much research, that the length of a g54 is the same as a w56 and r151f . And yes to find an r151f  is almost impossible anymore . So with that in mind ,the only choice I had was to have marlin rebuild a w56hd for me . I know you can put in a r150 ,but you will need a bellhousing and adapter and some other parts that quickly bring the price up. Ideally, It would have been great to have the r151f , but for what i need the w56 should be plenty tough behind my 22r .  :turtle2: :turtle2: :turtle2: :usa:

b_sherwood3,  Not sure who you were asking. I found my R151F totally by accident. Thought I was buying a W56 on Craigslist and it ended up being "THE HOLY GRAIL"

Whoda thunk it
