Front D-shaft options
« on: Feb 07, 2005, 10:03:48 PM »
I am fix'in to do an SAS on my 88 Runner. It has the V6 with auto. I will be installing a used set of the all-poo's front 4'' springs. (or what ever came in the 5.5" extreem lift kit for front springs)

Here are my two cheap options as I see them:

#1. Use a die grinder and clearance the stock front cv joint to take more angle and the use square tubing for the shaft

#2. Use just a standard u-joint at the case end and use square tubing for the shaft.

I don't care about vibrations on the street since This shaft will not see any speeds about 20mph. I know that running a dual case will make the angles better but I know there are some on this board running close to this lift with the autos. What is the better solution for me?

Thanks for the help

Single u-joint with square shaft.  Thats what Im running in my 90.  I did it a bit differently (of course) and I used 2x1/4" and 1 1/2x1/4".  The 2 1/2 for outer is pretty big and i wanted to have a lighter weight driveline that had a smaller diameter.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Yep.  2nd the Square shaft.

Stronger than you will ever need and just plain works and its cheap.

I have dropped onto my front driveshaft from over 4 foot and in just nicks the paint.
