I have welded rear with stock 4.38's in my 80. Now that I have it tagged and am driving it on the street more I hate it and will be looking to get a locker of some kind in the near future. When I mostly drove it on the trail I loved it because it never faild, 100% traction to both wheels 100% of the time. Just depends on how much you drive it on pavement.

X2! You'll go through tires like crazy if it's a daily driver. I have a lockright and I'm getting sick of it already because sometimes it pops and locks up my tires around corners. Zip locker here I come! Just my 2 cents.

crazy talk. I only run welded rears, but Im a budget kinda dude. Zip lockers are cool if you got the money. Ill run a welded or spooled dif in the rear anyday over one of those bootsy lunchbox things. Predictability is what its all about. As far as tires, rubber was made to burn

do the math how much in tire wear are you really saving if you have a detroit or lock right? is it worth 200-500 bucks how much money will you really be saving with having a locker? I know this sounds dumb but when you think about it it makes sense to me anyways :dunno: I was told that you only loose 20 percent of your tire life do the math is 20 percent of a tire really worth the money thats just my :twocents: and besides weld= free traction! 20 cents worth of siclicone you get the same benifit as would 200 dollar "investment"

Of course it's worth it, a good 35 inch tire is around $250, 20% of that is $50 get 4 tires, yeah that's about $200. More if your running 37s, and that's only for 1 set of tires.

I've run both spooled/welded and Detroit/lockright, the additional tire wear was minimally more one over the other. Remember that if you are on the gas even a Detroit will stay locked in. Only coasting around a corner all the time will make much a a difference in wear. Air or e-lockers are about the best way to save tires.

my point exactly its smoother having a detroit in the rear but thats 500 dollars your gonna spend to do the same thing as a welded diff will

The thing I notice the most about my welded rear is the loss of power around corners. If I am turning from a stop I really have to give it gas and clutch it more than usual to make it around the corner. Therefore in certain situations I think it can also be harder on the clutch than a locker. I agree though that air or electric is the best way and that will be the way I go before too much longer.

ive had a detroit. and i have a welded.  Much prefer welded because you know its always locked.   if you are off the throttle during a corner then get back on it might kick  you sideways a  bit.  Happened to me and i got a reckless driving ticket over it. :smack:  But it got dropped  :smokin:

If you plan on competing in a series you will want selectability, go air or e-locker. If you are just hammering it as a toy then go with a spool/welded dif.

I absolutely hated having a welded or spooled rear. Destroyed my swampers and made it a pain to drive on the street. Go with a locker imo

I have elockers front and rear now so I am spoiled and would be hard to go back.

Yep, stock 1980 4cyl gears with the 4 speed trans is 4.375. Probably the only good thing about having a truck that came with a 4 speed lol. I absolutely love them on the highway because I am not turning 3 grand at 65 mph but they dont suck as much as 4.10's. I did all my gear reduction in tcases so I get low gears on the trail and can keep my higher gears in the axles for the road. Works out great.
