Longfield Install Help
« on: Aug 13, 2011, 12:19:03 PM »
So this is my first time rebuilding a front axle.  I finished my passenger side and am currently trying to get the driverside shaft in but am having the hardest time getting it in.  I clearanced the birf like longfield said to by putting it into the spindle and spinning it and there was no rubbing.  I can get the birf in just to the point where you cannot spin it(flat spots touching the knuckle ball) but then it will not go in any further.  Ive tried spinning the driveshaft as well with no luck.  Is there anything else I can try or something I may have overlooked?  This is going into an 83 housing with 5.29s and a lockrite.

i had the same problem with mine. if you havnt already grab a buddy and have em spin the driveshaft while you give it hell and if you have to dont be afraid to put a block of wood over it and tap it with a hammer. goodluck

I have to whack mine in with a rubber mallet.

Also apply downward pressure to it. That will lift the diff side spline.

You can try forever then all of a sudden it will just slide in. Keep trying.

Thanks for the the input I finally managed to get it in just took many tries and a sledge hammer I ended up inserting the shaft first then inserting the birf into the knuckle and hitting it with a hammer to join the birf to the inner shaft.  Now its time to go test it out.
