carb issue or fuel line?
« on: Jun 16, 2011, 05:58:10 PM »
I have a little issues with a 22r carbed 84 4-Runner, the po said it maybe the fuel line that connects to the fuel filter may have a crack in it, since he did not replace that one but the other one he did.

Anyhow the issue is that does not want to start without a cap full of gas into the carb, then it starts right up. Basically, its draining from that area or draining back somewhere. They said it should start with reguar day starts, well it was for a lil bit , but not anymore. I wonder what it could be.

The po also said the carb was rebuilt so maybe thats not the issue. or is it?

Thanks

sounds like the carb might have a problem witht he shut off needle not closeing off completely and it is causeing the fuel to flow backwards :twocents:

Thanks for the reply.. I need to look at a carb diagram or a picture of where the shut off needle is ,, can you adjust them so it closes completey so fuel does not go backwards as you said?

First, check the sight glass and see if there is fuel in bowl when you are experiencing this problem.  If you don't then perhaps your bowl is going dry, but it would be likely do to a crack or some other catastrophic failure.  If you do then, with a flashlight and your choke wide open, look down the throat while opening the throttle quickly and see if you see a squirt.  If not, the accelerator pump circuit of your carb is bad.  If the vehicle has sat for a long time it could be that it is just clogged with varnish and it might clear up with an additive like techron or Seafoam.  Hope this was helpful.

Also check your fuel lines going right out of your tank. Those were completely rotted on my old truck so I lost gas everytime I parked till I finally figured out that's where it was leaking

Thanks for the replies guys. Sometimes it starts fine other days it needs help. I looked at the fuel lines they seem new, I need to look inside the carb for that issue. I believe it has sat for a long time without being started or driven enough.
Also the fuel filter sits on the frame by the fuel tank, I thought the fuel filter was supposed to be bolted with a bracket inside the engine bay, maybe am wrong on a carbed 84'. I doubt that has anything to do with it. I am sure its carb related or the ciruct maybe as 1st gen said.

posting in this thread instead of cloggin up otheres with a new one
My carb has exact same issue. it was running kind of poor. and wouldnt start without being primed. i took carb off and down to the 3 sections and cleaned bowl and everything out. bowl was real dirty.
Truck runs wayyy better now. but still wont start without a prime.
and Sight glass is Dry of fuel if it sits for me then about 15 mins. so would this be cracked fuel line issue??

Sounds like a leaking fuel line to me. Just crawl around and look for a leak.

the accelorator pump works when carb has fuel in it. problem is the carb drains the bowl  if it sits.
