electrical gremlin on 81 toy
« on: Jun 15, 2011, 07:47:44 PM »
I hopped in to start my toyota the other day and Nothin, dead battery. jumped it, started and ran fine until i removed the cables it dies immediately. warrantied out another alternator and put it up. Same thing happens, ive removed the voltage regulator and battery to get checked out. battery is being charged but the regulator isnt in till tomorrow. Does it sound like a bad regulator?
i checked it online and the regulator is oval type connector and is for a 55 amp alternator, my alternator is only 40 amps will this cause a problem?  oh yeah and my volt reg is only a year old.   Any input would be awsome

mine on my 1st gen truck is on the passenger side under the dash it is a square little box that has a funny little plug and it says CHARGE LAMP RELAY on it. (HOWEVER) i have spoken with marlin and he told me his CLR is on the drivers side :dunno: why  so it could be on either side however IF the CLR is bad or not working you will be able to tell by looking at the dash when you turn the key to the on pos. you will not see the bat. light come on and the truck will not crank  :turtle: :turtle: :turtle:

Thanks bud. My just stays on all the time. When i unplug the voltage regulator is goes off. Im hoping that i just have an alternator that not matched up with the regulator.

thats what im dealing with i think the alternator and the regulator need to be compatible and meant for the same amount of amps.

i put the charged battery in along with the new regulator, and nothing different. oil light comes on weakly along with weak beeps then gets stronger but still no charge light. when i start it, i hear a click then it goes completely dead. im gonna get the battery tested again and buy a charge lamp relay. also i checked as many wires as i could but saw nothing bad.
-samuel i dont think it matters if the regulator is higher amps than the alternator, i did run it for over a year with no problems.

Battery tested good and charged at napa. also quoted napa and orielly for a charge relay but only orielly has it for $92 + a week to ship. my question is can the relay even stop the truck from getting voltage and kill it if its already running? time to look at the fuse panel and chase wires.
Another thing if someone can tell me where all the grounds go in that area it would help a lot

you dont have the charge lamp relay it will leave a open circut in the loop  and it will SHUT IT DOWN

So it ran fine for about 5 days, But now its being a huge Turd. I was comin home the other night and a couple mins out from my house the idle kicked up to 1500. i thought it was just my TP on the fritz again.  Tryed to start the next morning and she runs like total garbage, im talkin chuggin bad, smells like raw gas w/ a little white smoke, wont start unless pedal is at least 1/2 down, will not idle it chuggs and dies if givin it no gas, has a miss to about 3.5-4k. Also if i try to keep it running at low rpm, at about 1300 and lower it drops down to bout 400 then shoots back to 1300 for a second or so, dies down to 400 and back. Im wondering if it could be the charge lamp relay messing with the choke, apparently they're part of the same system.
ive tryed just about everything and am at a total loss, ideas pleasE?

Alright FML. I pulled it out of my driveway onto flat and now its doing the SAME electrical BS it was before. i turn the key to On and all the lights and beeps are extremely weak like theres almost no voltage getting thru, turn to start and everything goes out and i get Nothing. that relay must be an effin b*std to be screwing my truck up this bad. how can it keep it from starting But also keep it from running good If it starts. Anyone else see why this makes aboslutely no sense? ive replaced the alt, reg, and had the battery checked out twice. besides ignition, the charge relay, some fuses, and wires theres nothing else to the system unless im missing something. and ive checked almost all the wires and fuses. Has anyone else had this problem before or is my 81 the only one?

check the external regulator and also check to see if the fuel pump is good  and also check to see if the fuel filter is clean  and also check to see if the plugs are clean  also check and find out why SOMETHING is draining the battery  when the key is off SOMETHING IS GETTING POWER either a winch or lights or a radio or SOMETHING

OKay so it turned out that problem was a mixture of my alt. ground wire had rubbed thru and was intermittently arcing out plus a clean looking but dirty pos. terminal.
Although it now has Yet Another problem. i was coming home last night from wheeling and Just my charge light came on and its Dim not bright, so i turned off my heater and radio yet no difference, a couple minutes later it started to have a lack of power and misfire which got progressively worse, But my headlights werent dimming at all. Any ideas what this could be? i started it up this morning and it started like a champ so my alt and battery are still charging but it runs like crap, idles and runs with a bad misfire and a Dim charge light.
Dim charge light? yes  :dunno:
im going to autozone to have the system checked again and will report back. thanks for the help guys

I chased a gremlin in my 83' for about three weeks, had a couple of the same issues as you, charge and brake light on, good alt but no charge through the system, new reg, redid all grounds and on and on.
Gave up and put in a 94 amp GM one wire with the help of a new trail-gear chev/toy replacement alt mount. Hooked it up and all problems went away, charges great. Pulled the charge relay to end the charge and brake light problem
I hope you get yours figured out.
