rebuilt carb woes

for my new motor, i had my carb rebuilt because it wouldn't idle.  turns out it was pretty screwed up, and needed a new float as the old one was full of gas...$65 for the part alone!  so i'm sitting here now with a $300 new old carb, which runs great except one thing...it sputters out under load!  i checked my sight glass and there's just a tiny puddle of fuel at the bottom, and what looks like a stream coming in from the top while running.

how do you adjust the float level on these?  the chilton manual i have isn't worth a damn and my FSM is for an '80 truck so no luck with my '82 carb and motor.

whens the last time you replaced your fuel filter?
sometimes it is sumething easy like that.
also chect all the vacuum lines for leaks/hooked up right.

Welcome to workin on the most intricate carbs toyota built, atleast from what I've been told.  You can't just bend the tab a little?  Wish I had a spare sittin around so I could just tear it down and find out for you.......I'll try and remember to check my manual when I'm at my storage unit tomorrow and see what it says,    Nate

Have whoever rebuilt your carb fix it. Setting the float correctly is part of the rebuild :twocents:

Dude I hate to say it but Id be suprised if you can sit down comfortably.  You got raped on a carb rebuild, the kit is about $65 but the labor??  Holy hell that dude made out rather well.  I have a few carbs sitting here Ill tear one down tomorrow and give you the exacts on how to adjust the float.

i'm gonna go raise hell at the shop tomorrow.  i got bent over good, i spend that much money, the damned thing better do the dishes and clean the bathroom for me too.  the breakdown for the rebuild was like this:

overhaul labor $125
carb kit $65
float $60!!!!!
extra labor to free up siezed secondary $25
chemicals $850

came out to $285 without tax, $309 with it :slap:

i took it there because they were the only place in town that i could find that regularly rebuilt carbs, one shop said they couldn't rebuilt it unless it was on the truck  :laugh:  and i didn't wanna trust an autozone carb.

Damn $125 in labor and $60 for a float?  Before I went down to the shop Id stop by napa and price a float.  Ill getcha its no more than $20. ;)

actually they went to napa for the rebuilt kit and float.  i was originally quoted at $200 for the whole job but they said it was pretty screwed up inside.

i did some looking, even a float from autozone is $40!  seems a lot of money for something so simple.

Especially when I have 5 or 6 spare 22r carbs sitting here that Ill never use.....

I'm pretty sue you need to adjust your float, same thing happened to me when I rebuilt mine. You can pop the carb apart enough to bend the tabs so that the float will allow the carb to hold more fuel.  But I would take it back to were it was rebuilt and make them do it as part of the rebuild while it's in the truck.

i tested it by blowing through my fuel line.  went easy until there was a wee bit of gas in the slight glass then i felt resistance(float shutting  off the flow).

this place either better fix it for free or they get an earful from me

and my motor is going to be carb only, as i have an '82 block/head with no provions for an EFI manifold like '83-up blocks.  if i do it again i'll  probably go with an '85 or newer block and a new engnbldr head as there's a lot less headaches than working with the early engines.

Do it, I like showing up the EFI guy's anyways. I have yet to have my carb lean out from near vert inclines or declines and it runs sideways past 30 degrees so as far as I can tell it just doesn't run upside down. I like more mechanical and less electrical anyways if there is a problem it's easier to fix.  :twocents:

i have no beef with carbs as long as they're assembled properly :slap: i can adjust everything else, just don't make me take the stupid thing apart.  nothing like that grunting noise they make with an open element air cleaner too :bowdown:

oh yeah, and i just like the way they drive on the road too, much better feel imho than fuel injection

309?  I was quoted $400-500 everywhere I went.  Carbs are one of the few things that I wont do myself.  Carbs, auto tranys, and wiring harneses.
