I want to give the 20r/22r hybrid a try. In all of the research I have been doin it seems like I need a 84 or older block. I have two blocks and neither of therm are original to the 85 or 87. I don't know what year truck they came out of. Does anyone know how to tell the difference? Is there a way to decipher the stamping numbers? The numbers on the block out of the 85 are 1371425 (located on the driver side of the block), the one out of the 87 reads 1273837. I figure the block out of the 87 is earlier than the 85 since its almost 100,000 lower. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Deck heights are different. early blocks had a taller deck with the taller "domed" pistons and the late blocks have a shorter deck with the flatter style pistons.

This is measuring from the center line of the main journal:

   * Early 20R Blocks 75-80         9.120"
   * Early 22R Blocks 81-84         9.120"
   * Late 22RE Blocks 85-95        8.930"

or measuring from the oil pan rail:

   * Early 20R Blocks 75-80           11.280"
   * Early 22R Blocks 81-84           11.280"
   * Late 22RE Blocks 85-95          11.090"

Thanks for the info. I measured the one block and I don't think its gonna work. Its like 11 3/16 inches. The other will have to wait for tomorrow cuz its still in the truck outside and the snow is coming down heavy. Plus neither of them have domed pistons, which tells me that its a given that its not tall enough.

I think LC Engineering has some pictures showing the differences in the blocks.

I know for sure that one of the blocks is a "Laser Block". I just looked at the LC pic and recognised the 'micky mouse' lookin identifier. Thanks for all of the help guys. I appreciate it.
