triple transfercases?
« on: Sep 30, 2002, 11:59:57 AM »
I just bought a brand new MC05 adapter plate, rebuilt 85 EFI top shifting T-case, 83 top shifting T-case, and an unused half a T-case that has some sort of older style adapter plate for a dual case setup, Bud Built, and 2 re-done drive shafts for a dual case setup, all for $780 including shipping. I was wondering if I should put all this together for triple Transfer cases? will my driveshafts be way to short and always fall out? I know it's over-kill, but I thought it would be cool to be able to say I had triple T-cases.
I have an 85' EFI extra-cab flatbed pickup.

I was seriously considering the same thing.    It's not overkill, it put's you a little lower than a stock front case and 4.7:1 gears in the rear.  The advantages are your d-shafts are almost the same length so you only need one spare, you have more gear choices and you have 4 shifters!!.  But you need a 23 spline rear case. The concensus is a 21 spline case will not hold.  So after I added up the cost of 2 adapters, another case and the 23 spline conversion it was cheaper to just do the "ultimate".

For my/my buddys truck it would accually be cheaper to do 3 cases rathe then 2 with 4.70:1 because we allready have 3 cases.
But do you really need the 23 spline?

You can do what you want.  Try it with a 21 spline and see.

Im just asking im pretty sceptical myself but could it be done I mean marlin runs what like 3 case with 4.7 in 3 or 2, yes i know hes all 23 spline but with 3 4.7s thats allot of stress on the rear case and if marlin can pull it off with 3 4.7s and 23 spline cant I pull it off with 3 stock geared cases and 21 spline??

Essentially you are doing an "ultimate" with 3 standard cases. It WILL fail if you use the front 2 in low, regardless of low or high in the rear. The 5.198:1 ratio is lower than 4.7. It is recommended to run 23 spline in the back when an ultimate has the 4.7 in front. With the 4.7 in the rear there is "stock" stress on the 21 spline input.

Clear as mud? I got myself confused on this one :thud:

I have decided agianst it because i dont think i can do it :(.The SLO-Mo is at least 6 inches which would make my drivshaft waaayyy too short. I am going to sell it so i can have a little extra cash laying aroud to go into buying a locker or somthing. What i am in the midst of doing now is swapping my extra cab cab on to my shorbed regular cab frame. need ideas on how to make my flatbed and other cool modifacations i might consider adding would be appreciated. Also does anyone know if I am going to need to put a body lift on when i put the cab on the other frame? Also looking for a passenger side marker/paking light and a grille ;D.

I assume marlin or some one tried this and broke the rear shaft? Correct me if im wrong but doesnt marlin run 3 4.70:1 equiped cases in his truck, if he does this is allot of touque on the rear case (mike said this some where on here)"but since he isnt going to dump the cluch on pavement, in low-low-low 1st gear at 6000rpm it isnt a problem"
