loses power at high rpms
« on: May 08, 2011, 07:32:43 PM »
Today was drivin my runner and at high rpms it stopped accelerating. It seems that it is when I push on the gas pedal harder it does it. It feels like maybe the clutch pressure plate?? Any help greatly appreciated

while stopped or barely moving put it in 4th and dump the clutch, see what happens.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

It makes sense that itd be the pressure plate and clutch cuz it only does it with the gas pedal more than half way down. The tranny isn't makin noise or shifting any different either

A lsipping clutch can be from worn disk or woprn pressure plate.Im about 90 precent sure from yopur description your clutch is slipping. If its the disk OR the pressure plate, either way your going to be buying a new clutch kit. What brand clutch do you have in there now?

if you plan on keeping your truck for a long time, go with Marlins HD clutch kit. performs flawlessly and your leg won't feel like it's working out.

Amy i am sure the cheap clutch would work  i bet there are thousands of trucks running around with one . BUT for just a little bit more you will be Alot better off .  .

Ive had my Marlin1200HD clutch in my truck since 2002.   thats 9 long years of muddin, rock crawlin, snow, deep water, daily driving a 120 mile commute from 2002-2005,  and hauled some INSANE loads of scrap metal on a trailer and it STILL performs flawlessly.

And let me tell you,  you will either spin a tire or kill the engine when you slip your foot off the pedal.

At this point, id imagine its to far gone to clean. I have had good results myself with all brand clutches BESIDES centerforce. They seem to wear out extremely fast on these toyotas. I dont know if its the tiny engine, the gears in the trans, or the way we drive these trucks, but I swear I hear of more of those cf clutches going bad than any other.

Whaever your pocket can afford is what id go with.

Started the runner to try and move it to fix and it does not sound happy AT ALL! What does a motor sound like when its done for? I've been told now maybe no compression? Anyone??

Before you replace the clutch or the engine, have it checked out by someone who KNOWS what there doing so you don't waste your money.

To answer your question a engine thats going bad can make all kinds of noises. Like knocking, rattling, grinding or sometimes a big bang and your done.

Checking the compression is not that hard and a compression gauge doesnt cost that much.

With clutch slippage, the rpms rise, but the speed doesn't.....................

It stops at certain rpms depending on how hard I'm pushing the gas pedal

That doesn't sound like a clutch problem.

Carb or EFI?

No high rpm power could mean the timing chain has jumped a few teeth.

Does the engine rattle?
