4WD Clunk
« on: Apr 28, 2011, 10:58:14 AM »
Alright guys it all started with a clicking coming from the front wheels so under further ivestigation i put it in 4WD and locked the hubs to hear a bad clunk like something is binding, so i then unlocked the hubs and drove it in 4WD and the clunk went away, so i thought it was the birfield, i took the axle apart, and everything looks fine, birfs wheel bearing everything, so where do i look next? im thinking its the diff but i dont know where to start first? has anyone ever had this problem before? Thanks guys

yes and nothing, im thinking it has to be the driveline for sure, unless its the transfercase, but if its the transfercase then it only does it under load

Could be the centering ball, they fracture and bind causing a nasty clunking noise. Just replaced mine for the same symptom.

I had the same problem just recently.
I had sheared 7 gears in a row of the ring gear. It also had large chips in other places on the gear.
I guess anything can happen when your crawling.
this is where i think your problem is.

just a little update today after finally being able to get out of bed(wisdom teeth got pulled) i was able to hook up the front drive line again, due to my disappointment the clunk is still there, which i feel only leaves one last place to look, which would be the front diff, if the problem is there then im most likely just going to start my regearing process of front and rear, doesnt make sense to pull everything and regear later on

Guys I finally tore into the front diff and look what i found,

and the teeth that got chewed off
....

so its time to start regearing, going to go with 5.29s, so while i was at it i pulled the rear diff which is a v6 but im not exactly sure what its supposed to look like,
is this right ? or is there a limited slip in there?

Oh, ohh, pinion was loose and dropped on the carrier. I had that happen on my 84, sucks if you'd have caught it early you may have saved it. Mine was the rear, I also regeared at that point and dropped in a couple Detroits to ease my pain.

time for an aussie.  go with a solid spacer when you rebuild the thirds.  you won't have to worry about the crush sleeve getting messed up if you hit the drive line on a rock.

This is how i found all my teeth when i messed up my diff. same thing you got no huge chunks coming out the bottom but when you tear into it then you find the problem. Well I'm glad you figured it out and hope everything else works out for ya.
