I finished up my rear bumper last week so decided to start my tire carrier yesterday. Im almost done
I turned down a piece of 1-3/4 barstock for a hinge and used some old 3/4 heims.

I need to add some gussets and mounts for my hi lift

I like it.  How about a close up of the finished pivot point.  What keeps the heims from dropping when the other end isn't supported?

I will take some tonight. There's nothing that keeps it from dropping having the two heims bolted to the same plate keeps them from dropping. If it was just one heim icheapld pivot in all directions but 2 will only allow it to pivot side to side not up and down. Its hard to explain but it works great. I have used that design on several carriers and it is very strong and cheap.

A picture would be great for documentation, but I think I understand it now.

I like this setup because i can adjust the height of the carrier. With weight on it and it sags on the one side i can raise or lower it

Spent a few hours finishing my carrier. Got it primed.

Made some knobs on my lathe for holding down my hilift.

Blued the knobs

The arm lengths would need to change for it to drop.

How is it down the highway?  I had one on my 84 and when I'd start hitting the tiny whoop de doos in the highway mine used to shake back and forth like a mutha, enough to shake the truck.  I used a nerf football between rack and tailgate, helped kinda.

I like the use of the heims.  I have always worried about making one and the carrier starting to sag and not re aline to latch closed... This method is adjustable!

steamer88

Yes, very well built! Nice and clean, looks like that's how you do things. Do you have any close ups of the latch? And did you do any thing to keep the assembly from rocking front to back?

i know this is an old post but how has the  tire carrier held up over time ? Anything you would change to make it better or more durable ? Thanks

Yes! What he said. I'd like to know how this is holding up.

RockaRunner

Came out great! I have one also but hate how much rear view vision it takes away when driving it.
