4WD Clicking Noise
« on: Apr 18, 2011, 04:23:03 PM »
I have had a clicking noise when in 4wd for quite some time now. To try and see what it is,  I jacked my truck off the ground(all 4 tires), started the truck, put it in 4wd LOW, and put it in gear. There was NO clicking at this point.

However, while driving the truck, I managed to look under the truck as i was in gear and moving. The clicking was consistent with the driveshaft spin. As i applied more gas, I could see my transfer case tilt against the transfer case mount bushing on the passenger side of the mount. When the transfer case tilted under load is when I would start to hear the clicking.  (The rubber bushings in the mount look pretty soft and rotted, by the way.)

So here's my dilemna: 1. The driveshaft u-joints were all in good condition when I installed the driveshaft just a few days ago
                              2. There's no indication of anything rubbing against anything as a result of the transfer case tilting under load

What could it be?!   (The birfields look fine too. Just repacked the knuckles)  Any help would be greatly appreciated

I agree, needle bearings will click under load, if they are bad.

Sure enough, took the front driveshaft out and the CV end is sloppy as heck and clicking when i move it!  At least it's good to know it'll be a cheap fix.

Does the CV part of the driveshaft use the same u-joint type as the non-CV end?

Not if you live near a great offroad specialist shop!
