Assemble hubs with rtv instead of gaskets?
« on: Apr 11, 2011, 05:52:48 PM »
Is it cool to put lockout hubs together with rtv or similar instead of the paper type gaskets?

Either one will work fine. Both will keep water out and grease in.

When you have to take it apart on the trail to swap out a broken birf you will wish you used the paper.  It's re-usable.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

And a little bit of Hylomar on the paper will insure their re-usability.......

I'm sure it will seal them well, I was more wondering if the thickness of the 2 gaskets was necessary for proper spacing.

Your tool box should have a tube of RTV in it.

Proper spacing for?
I dunno. I guess that's the question. Maybe the end of the outer shaft to the inside of the hub dial?
I know it can be necessary to use the required gaskets for other things for proper bearing loading or shaft spacing. I figured it's probably cool but wanted to hear from those who've done it.
