I need your opinions
« on: Feb 26, 2011, 10:07:26 PM »
Should I wait for Marlin to get restocked on their 4.70's or should I just buy one of his crawl boxes and sell my current rear t-case? Thanks in advance.

Not that you could not put it together youself correctly but if you bought one from Marlin you know it is going to be correct. Also if you have a problem it wil be easier to take care of since you can't be blamed.

So you're talking about getting a crawl box from him with 4.70?

they have some one setting up gears that has no clue what their doing so you would be better setting them up your self. read the threads about the tranny problems people are having. not knockin on them but they don't really have any quality control now a days.

do you really need to do the 4:70 now? i would just send them a message to get atleast an idea of when they will be back in stock. if its not to long and you can wait... then do so and save some coin. if its going to be a while maybe then you could do the crawl box idea.

Do you have duals now?  You'll want the 4.70 gears in the rear case for durability.  If you already have duals you might as well wait if you're confident in your skills.  You won't gain that much in wheeling if you already have duals.  If you have a single stock case then it might be worth getting it now if you have some wheeling trips planned that you would miss out on by waiting.

yeah, I'm currently running dual stock cases w/ twin sticks conversion in the rear case for about 2yrs and it has done me alot of justice so far.

In my opinion you don't NEED lower gears so I'd wait until you can get the best price IF you're capable of doing the install yourself.  I'm not so I purchased a full 4.70 rear case and ran a single 4.70 case for several years.  You'll love the lower gears, but I've found that the most useful gear is really 1st gear in 4.70 low which should be similar to low-low in a stock double case configuration.  The lower gears often don't have enough momentum for climbing.  My experience is almost all in Moab so it likely doesn't apply to all wheeling.

Have you looked for used 4.7's or a used t-case with 4.7's in all ready? That's how I got mine. $250 for rebuilt transmission and 4.7 transfer case.

Here's how I'd make the decision.  First, you have to determine how much benefit you're really going to get from having lower gears and how much of it is a bling factor.  With dual cases you have plenty low gears for most wheeling.  Second, you need to determine how much your time is worth on this project.  If you're not familiar with the gear install it'll take you a few hours to do the swap and there is always a risk that you could do it incorrectly.  I know that part of the install is clearancing the case housing for the larger gears and this could take some time using the trial and error method.  Third, is the $225 difference in cost significant for you?  Will it squeeze your budget significantly and/or prevent you from purchasing something else that you need or want?  Finally, you have to combine these things and make a choice before the assembled cases are also out of stock.

Then don't wait. If you wait, it'd be like saying, "Oh that's fine that you don't have yet another part in stock Marlin Crawler, I'll just wait half a year because you can't keep stocked shelves."

good point....I'm changing out my clutch so that's why I want to put in the 4.70 now since I have to take off the t-case anyway. My trucks going to be out of commission for a couple of days due to multiple upgrades. To think about it, It won't be a major gain due to current setup up but having that security blanket as a rear case always helps.

I was leaning towards that way but BlackDiamond brought up some good points. Not only that but loosing my rear t-case as a core will hurt due top shift conversion kit, twin sticks (but that will be reused) and paid 100.00 for the tcase.
