The race truck.
« on: Feb 02, 2011, 10:02:44 PM »
So awhile back I picked up a 78 long box sr5.  In the building of it I actually made money.  In the end I had a 20/22r hybrid with a 45dcoe, 4 to 1 header W58, alloy wheels and performance tires, a spare 8" rear axle, and a MSD 6al with ss coil and about $50 in my pocket licensed and all. :talkingn:

As I got it.

After my wife hit it with some wax and I put wheels and tires on it.

After the new engine install and rear 3" blocks and 3 coils removed from the front springs.

And the engine I put in in all its short lived glory. :gap:

So I had some issues with oil pressure and a rattle that sounded like the timing chain.  I shimmed the oil pump relief piston 1/4" and it went away and I still only had 10 psi at idle hot. :hahaha:  I knew it wouldn't last long but I rodded that balls out of it anyway and it let go at about 20 miles an hour as I shifted into 3rd go figure.

The damage to the engine is kinda extensive. :talkingn:

I'm ordering up a new cam, double valve springs, oversized valves and a complete rebuild kit with new rockers etc in the next couple weeks so she'll be back in action far better than before.  In inspecting the engine today it was apparent it wasn't going to live long anyway.  The whole damned thing was trashed but hell I made money and had fun plus I have all the fun parts for the next engine. :gap:

It was some major damage but after looking at things closely I'm surprised it lasted this long.  The bearings were all hammered dog crap, the intake valves had worn flat spots in the pistons due to the head being shaved too much, it had a 20r head gasket so there was barely any metal being used to hold the compression.  The head gasket was also messed up above the timing cover so the PO did his usual fix and just slathered it in ultra red RTV. :talkingn:  It'll all be back together and raping the streets soon enough.

It doesn't show up in the pictures but the truck is actually a perfect grabber green.  Stupid cell doesn't pick up the color worth beans.

It had enough character before I got ahold of it... It really was in sad shape.  When you hear it fire up and instantly it's in gear floating the valves on a 30* morning you should know its gonna be bad when it comes apart.  The kid that had it was kinda hard on things. :talkingn:

Yup bored and decently built 20/22r.  It should run rather well when it's done.

Very nice  :smokin:  I once got a really clean little 74 from the original family, swapped engines and made a tidy little profit.  It was neat and all, but the 18r/8r just had too loud a mechanical sound to them, which ended up being the deciding factor in getting rid of it.

Are those aftermarket wheels or mid 80s cherokee wheels?

They are mid 80's cherocar wheels.  They are almost a perfect fit but I need about 1/2" more backspacing to clear some real rear tires. I have a really nice set of centerline 15 x 8's that are really light that I'm thinking need to go on the back if I narrow my spare rear axle. That would be more for looks really though I doubt I'll have too much issue with traction with some sticky 225"s out back that I can fit now. :gap:

Kinda depends on how you'll be driving it, but my old 81 would break loose both rears quite easily and was very picky with what tires I ran.  It frequently wagged its' tail in corners, even when running sticky 205/50s.  I HAD a set of dot race yokohamas, 205/50-15 front and 225/50-15 rear, that I was going to run on it, but those are the ones that were stolen from me a couple years back.

If I were to again set one up for corners, I'd probably go 225/50-16 front and 245/50-16 rear.

With the more performance oriented 205/60's it hooked pretty well but when I put the 215/70's on the back so I could drop the rpm's a bit they get blazed off with no issue.  It's funny, the more ya heat them up the less they grip.  Once you get a nice solid burnout into them they'll spin doughnuts like no other. :talkingn:

Got the new engine today and started cleaning it up. It came with a saweet 1 5/8" loooong tube header. If the new header fits good I won't have to play musical headers. I have a headman shorty (left) that will go on when I body drop it and finish the suspension due to all my other headers hanging below the frame. The pace setter (2nd from left) is what was on the old engine and it fits decent enough. I picked up another equal length header (2nd from right) that clears the frame great but hangs too far below the frame to work. The large tube looong bastid on the right is what I'm going to try and fit tomorrow. I really hope it works out.

Ya shoulda stopped in...  I get sooooo many randoms stopping in to bs it's crazy.  A few of which have turned out to be great friends and not just looky loo's wanting to jabber.

I found out the big header is an LCE piece so I'm more than a little stoked about that.  I fired the truck up last night and did a nice little open header burnout.  I'll say right now that this engine will eat the old one for brunch and go back for leftovers at lunch time.  :driving:
