detriot locker
« on: Jan 16, 2011, 09:57:12 AM »
ok so im looking at an 84 extra cab with a bobbed bed that has detroit lockers front and rear. he says it's scary to drive on the road i personally think he's overreacting lol. so how would a detroit in the rear be for a daily driver? it has a 4 inch lift with a 2 inch BL on 35's with 5.29s, 22r with a 5 speed

I drive mine everyday with a rear Detroit, including on the ice which we've had a lot of this year. Hardly noticeable, but mine is fairly new. Years ago Detroits were a bit more harsh when locking and unlocking and not as predictable. I had an E-Z locker in the rear of my Jeep that would unload all the time, but I never hesitated to drive it in the winter. Your driving habits should be altered a bit anyways in a lifted flexy vehicle.
Some say a selectable is the only way to go in the back if you live where it snows, but I've been running automatic lockers for years and have no intention of changing. Some stock GM trucks came factory with Detroits in the 80's, so it obviously isn't a death sentence. I wouldn't drive it in 4wd on the street, that is scary locked up.
Go for it I say. Sounds like a cool ride.

If he doesn't know what a birf is, it would indicate he isn't very hard on the truck
That's a good sign.

I'm running a Detroit in the rear of my 85 pickup that has a 5" Marlin trail flex lift and 35" MTZ's. I know the locker is there but no big deal it drives fine. An occasional clang when taking off and tire chip when making a tight turn, that's all.

I have been running a Detroit in my 93 for two years now in Colorado. I drive it daily, about 5" lift, and loaded, it is find.

I've always run either a Detroit or welded rear, never had an issue in snow or ice. On the front I'd be wary and get out of the gas on turns, hit a patch of ice on a trail once and it didn't turn just went straight until it ratcheted.

I drive my truck on everyday with a detroit locker  in the rear differential and its really not a big deal.  The tires will squeal if you try to gas it around corners but if you kind of coast into them and accellerate out you wont even notice it
