Birfields ???
« on: Nov 29, 2002, 02:47:34 PM »
Correct me if I'm wrong: FJ's used birfields that are bigger than pickup/4runner birfields and are not interchangable. I don't know jack about FJ's, but I should. Help me out.

Only FJ80's use larger birfs. Actually pre FJ80's use birfs that are a bit smaller (were talking milimeters) than mini birfs, and early Cruisers that run Drum front brakes used a corse spline birf (only had I believe 9 splines) and those brake silly.

no offense Mike but leave the Cruiser questions to the Cruiser experts...lol :D

There are 4 different major birfield renditions...

69-75 US-Spec Drum front axles, coarse 10-spline birfields.  FJ40-45-55's all ran these...also carried over into some overseas models - I know a guy in France with coarse spline drum fronts on a 81 FJ.

76-78 Disc front axles, fine spline birfields.  (these have a slightly smaller bell diameter and slightly longer outer shaft than later models - FJ40's and FJ55's)

79 - 91 birfields, fine spline.  All FJ40-55-60-62 AND minitruck birfields from this era are the same.  Inner shaft lengths do vary however.

91+ 80-series birfs come in two varieties too....91-93 (I think) are the regular ones, 94+ units are setup for ABS functionality...not honestly sure what the difference is offhand....

NOTE in the above pic that the 77 FJ40 birf is noticeable longer in the shaft than the coarse spline 72 or in the Newfields.

In this pic, a 72 is on the left, then a 77, then a minitruck and finally a 2nd gen Newfield.  The greased short-side image is a Longfield.

Thanks Brian. 10 spline, got it. Yeah I would leave it up to the Cruiser experts, except where have they been? :talking:

CruzrDave fell of the face of the earth!

I did not know 76-78 birfs are longer. That is interesting!
Thanks for the info!

:idea:so hey let me ask this..I have herd that the longfeilds are better then the new marfeild..now the long feild,is that just a stock treated birfield,(this is what I have herd anyway)I don't know I'm still running stock ones with no problems..Anyway,I know the marfeild is a better design due to the thincker shell,so why can't a marfeild be treated by  bobby,or are they already treated?Would this be an advantage?woud it make it stronger? :dunno:
