87 runner 1st time crawler build
« on: Jan 03, 2011, 11:50:44 AM »
so im starting to build my 87 runner and i have a few ideas and some parts lying around. im thinking 7 leaf waggys for the front and 3 leaf 63" chevys for the rear... so far i got a 4.70 for the t-case, those springs mentioned, my solid axle and im getting ready for the sas kit.
let me know what you think and if the spring selection is good or outdated or whatever any input is welcome as i am new to this and it is my first crawler build. thanks   :)

Sounds like you are off to a good start.  I love my 63's in my pickup.  My best advice to you is just do a lot of research before you start hacking your rig.  Try to have a good idea and plan of what you want to do, also think about the future and what you want to do with your 4runner.  It's always easier to do it right the first time.  Post some pictures of your truck.  What size tires are you planning to run? What about your axle ratio?

IF YOU SEE A 20' PAC WEST/CARSON FLAT BED TRAILER FOR SALE CHECK OUT THE STOLEN SECTION.  IT MIGHT BE MINE!!!!

X2

Don't forget lockers, if you're going to change your gear ratio...put in your locker at the same time. It'll save you some time.

If you need help, you can look on this site or "google toyota sas" and whole bunch will pop up with step by step photo.

thanks for the input i am starting my build next week i just ordered my sas kit and i think im going to do all the suspension in one wack then same with gears and lockers just wait till i can do it all at once.  i wanna try the new spartan locker for the front and yukons grizzly for the rear. and ill probably go 5.29s cause its more versatile with tire choice. i started my electronics install (radio and cbs) ill post some pictures as soon as i get it all tucked in and complete

I think you should get Yukons new air locker for the front IMO if your going that way. Selectable locker for the front is way sweet, helps with alot of things. Toss the spartan in the rear. I think your spring set up sounds good but it's not a one size fits all, be prepared for some fine tuning!

My buddy has a cb mounted there but it's just a small one kinda sitting on top of his aftermarket radio.

Good luck on the build and post some pics when you can!

hey man I would deff run a selectable in the rear over the front all day IMO. I think regular lockers are retarded in the rear they pop hop clank bang do all sorts of :pokinit: I just did an sas job for my buddy in highshcool and he's already thinking about going back to a welded diff because its so harsh with the lockright activating and not and random onetire fires to fully locked i personally think if your driving it on the road alot to go that route if you were to do a selectable. if you arent driving on the road that much just get a spool less money and less to break IMO.
