Only happens when its cold, idling, and warming up in the first 30 seconds or so...
Sounds like a somewhat deep knock, taps maybe 3-4 times, goes away, maybe does it again, then not till the next morning.  Been pretty cold here FWIW, and the Taco lives outside (too cold to let it up on the bed).
Timing chain? :shudder:
Rod bearings? :conf:
Nuttin Honey? :yesnod:
151K miles, appears to have been well cared-for its whole life, not even off roaded.

Whatcha think?

Are you running a toyota oil filter?  Most aftermarket filters don't have the anti-drainback valve that keeps oil pressure on the timing chain tensioner.  You might try switching to the good Toyota Japanese filter ( The last 2 digits of the part number are D1 - if you get a filter with the last 2 digits 11, it's not what you want) and see what happens.  Expect to pay around $6 at your local dealership...

That may be all you hear- I've seen a few of these at work lately, as the temp has dropped around here.

Good luck,

My buddies 01 Tacoma does that when it is cold herre in Vermont, near as we can figure and from what we have been told it is piston slap.

That would be consistent with all the info I am getting on it as well.  Couldn't be rod knock, it would happen at other temps.  As I listen to it closely, it does sound slappy though a tad deeper than my old 2-stroke motorcycle :D

My '01 TAcoma w/ 3RZ (80k) does the same thing and it has always had genuine Toyota filters. A SBC 350 I rebuilt with forged pistons did it too, minor piston slap until the pistons warm up and expand in the cylinders.

TOYJOETA

my buddy's truck has been doin the same thing, when he starts it up there is a really loud tapping or clanging noise it's way to loud to be just piston slap, I changed his oil and used an ac delco filter, i don't think it has done it anymore.
Rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
There are only 3 kinds of people in the world, those who can count and those who can't. Which are you?
