Rig Intro
« on: Dec 12, 2010, 02:55:17 PM »
I can't remember if I posted an intro here. I searched my screen name, and came up blank. I am pretty sure I did though. Oh well Here goes again.

Rig = 1973 FJ40
Gearing = H41 Transmission 4.9:1, Orion T-case, 4:1, and 4.88's in the diffs
Lockers = Lockrite front, Aussie rear
Rear Axle = FJ60
Diff Protection = 10" pipe cap in front, Iron Pig Offorad rear
Springs = Alcan with orbit eyes in back set
Shafts/Birfs = PolyPerformance Chromo, and Longfields
Cage = MetalTech
Fenders = MetalTech
Hood = TrentFab polycarbonate
Tub = Aqualu
Engine = 2F and a Weber 38DGAS
Skid Plate = IronPig Offroad
Bumpers are one-off front and rear. the front is based on MetalTech's style, but not identical
Marlin Parts = Inner axle seals, High Steer, Pinion Seals, and probably some other stuff

This thing has seen a ton of trails from one end of America to the other and back again. Being in the military it has afforded me the opportunity to do this. It started as a stocker in Alaska where the SOA was initially done and I hit up some light trails there. Moved to Virginia from there, and hit Paragon, Tellico, and Crozet (First and only roll/flop). I even got in on a trip to Katemcy while living in Virginia. Now I am in SoCal. So far I have hit the Rubicon, and up to Clawhammer at Johnson Valley, with plans for as much as possible in the future.

Once I hit the mandated 11 posts I'll post up a pic.

I forgot to add some details.

FJ60 Power Steering, Hydro Assist is home brew.

Turn signals are BJ70

Rocker Sliders are Faultline Fab. (Crazy fiasco on the IH8MUD board. Somehow I actually ended up with a set)

I am sure I am forgetting a crap ton of stuff too.

One pic is from a local spot here in Rosamond. The driveway shot is just before loading up for the move from the East Coast.

I don't have many action shots for some reason. I guess it's a bit tough to get "THE" shot of your own rig with your own camera while you are driving.

I can snap a pic tomorrow. They are actually pretty simple. A length of angle with a a tube kickout. I think the tubing is 1 1/4". It has a 45 degree bend at both ends, and a couple braces spaced out to keep them from caving in. I trimmed the rocker up a bit before installing them too. I want to say the tubing is chromoly, but I am not 100 percent on that. The have held up well to being used as pivots though. I think Faultline is long out of business though. Too bad they are a good quality product.

They are actually very much out of the way for wheeling in the woods. I have destroyed 1 set in a rollover though. They are easier to get than you would think, but you just have to know where to look.

sweet rig.  Rosamond huh, I lived there for a while.  you said you were military i would only guess that you must be stationed at China Lake.  I remember days when my apartment would shake because of the bombs going off, if it wasn't that it was the planes going super sonic.  What a cool little town.

I got thinking after I posted that and remembered China Lake was in Ridgecrest not Rosamond.  Edwards AFB is pretty cool I got to see the space shuttle land there a few years back.  I also saw all sorts of sweet air planes like B2's flying around.

Yeah mang, My buddies dad took us to an air show out at Edwards in the 80's, didnt see it fly but the Challenger Space Shuttle was parked out on the tarmac for everyone to gawk at! We walked right up to it!
Amongst all the other planes out there, the one that amazed me most was a SR-71 Blackbird, just nosed out of a hanger. It just blew me away, hard to believe they started making these things back in '64

Is that an electric fan I see through your bezel?? I grabbed one from a Mercedes, but it looks like its gonna be too thick to fit in front of my radiator. What did you end up using on yours?

The fan is an E-bay'd Zirgo unit. I had to space it out about 1/2" as out of the box it kinda rubbed through the vanes. I didn't know until it was all the way through. I found out while rolling through tech inspection at the Lonestar Cruiser Roundup a few years back.  It is quite a tight squeeze, but just fits. I think it's the highest CFM model they make. It is also wired to a master switch for water crossings. I also used a relay form a Ford Taurus in the circuit. I figured since it handles the kick ou amp draw of one of those monster fans, it would handle the Zirgo would be no sweat, and it has given me no problems.

Thanks for the props on the bumper, it is my interpretation of the MetalTech design. I had a friend with a bender in Virginia do all the bending.
