Ive only ever heard of ONE person that broke a rear axle shaft,  and he was standing up a very steep incline and at full throttle bounced on the right rear tire.  dual cases and 37's,  something had to give and it did.

under 99% of wheeling you'll never brake a rear shaft

Well now you have heard of another two. First picture is a stock, the seconded is a Poly Performance alloy axle that I broke in two places.

I ran a 4-cylinder, ARBed, Genuine Geared diff on 37 MTR's & BFG's in the rear for many years with out a problem. V-6 or late model diffs (the four cyl in later years are the same as the V-6) are a bit stronger but IMHO not enough to worry about.

According to ZUK the V6 3rds are 10 percent stronger due to the slightly larger carriers bearings (5mm bigger). The axles are the same between 4 cylinder and V6.

i think I'm going to put the 97 3rd in my 82 axle because the 97 has a limited slip and 488 gears.

You can run V6 gears and what not in a 4cyl housing, Just need the right setup kit which has odd in the middle bearings.
If you see it, its for sale.

nope, u use the 4 cyl gears in a v6 housing/carrier with v6 bearings, u just need to shim the pinyon alot more, there is a writeup about it on zuks gear install's page
