Or a 81-82 22r, more power than a 20r, the carb is bullet proof, and its the early year so they have double timing chains  :willynilly:

Depends on what you are going to be doing with it. Look at some of the "Moon Buggys" they have small engines. The one that Jon from A-P comped years ago had an air-cooled VW engine. If you are talking Toyota 20/22r or the newer 4's that come in the Tacos they have good HP and lots of torque, 3.4 V-6 is another.

You can ask this question to 15 people and you will get 15 different answers, just like all motorsports.

Most dependable and longest lasting engine I've had to date was an 81 22r.  Logged at least 370,000 miles on the stock timing chain set, no rebuild, but I did go through a couple heads and eventually lost a bearing in the bottom end a few years after the pan kept flooding with coolant.  Would have well over 400,000 on it now if I'd just replaced the bearings when I went hybrid  :twocents:

I have to say the 22re, previous truck had 245k and ran like 100k. but if you want more power,
3rz (2.7L) from the tacos is a must have.
