hecriliner the frame????
« on: Nov 15, 2010, 04:37:23 PM »

Hey I have a 92 yota the body and frame are spotless (I bought it in south PA.) I make a big deal of this because I live in NY. To protect the frame I have some bed liner I was gonna use for a old truck I already sold. So whats your thoughts on painting the frame with it??? after that I was thinking of doing the inner part of the fenders and the bottoms of the doors maybe even a 3 inch roller stripe along the bottom?? will it shield the nasty salt from the frame or hold it right on tight??? Now my frame is already painted black think a rattle can of rustoleum is my best bet??? thanks for the help

Honestly dont do it.. undercoating is about the most god awful stuff on the planet.. just do a proper paint job with some rust inhib paint or get some tractor paint from tractor supply and do a few coats  that stuff is thick and tough.. my entire truck is painted with it and it barely has any scratches on it from all the manzanita and other bs ive had it in

I wouldn't do it either. Just use the herculiner for your bed or something. I cleaned off my frame and put a few coats of por15 on it. No rust is gonna get past that stuff.

I just did my solid axel swap and after all that grinding on the frame I used rustoium gloss black. and yes my whole frame and underside is gonna get it. I'm probly gonna do the inner fenders as well. NY uses salt it sucks.

I would also get some ZINK bars and put them in the frame.  I had my frame sanblasted bare and used $$ frame paint  did not help me  my frame is rusting from the inside out.

have to order it heres there number 18007260459 tell em what your doing and they should hook ya up with what ya need follow there directions and it will never rust and try to get some in the frame i was gonna use a small rubber hose connect a brake line and put tiny holes in it to spray it in my frame nice thing about this stuff is it can be used as a primer but seals all metal for life

I would have to say POR 15 as well.  Stuff is awesome!  I've got a bunch I'm going to be painting on to a new frame I'm building for yota.

I am in central PA, so i know all about those salt tossing death dealers called DOT. I also want to try to preserve my frame as best i can. i have seen a bunch of stuff on Por-15 but, has anyone ever used the eastwood rust encapsulator? i have used just plain old rustoleum spray paint before--it helps but it's not the cure all.

The people who say use the por-15...anybody have pics?  Also, how much did you use and the cost?  How old is the application?  Would you use it again? Same way with the rust encapsulator pics, cost, :blah:

I used por-15 on my frame and so far its holding up well. One thing you need to remember when using it is that it's sensitive to uv rays so a top coat is needed. I put 3 or 4 layers of por-15 and I think 2 coats of paint. My truck has been sitting out for a few months without a bed and the frame looks fine. I live near the ocean as well so the air is somewhat salty.

The cost wasn't too bad, I think about $30 for a pint. I would definitely use it again, it lasted for a good amount of time. In fact I need to get some more soon. Another thing to be careful about is to make sure the lid seats well after you use it. If any air can get in it will harden the paint.

If you want to see pics look at my build in my sig. I think there are pics on the first page.

With 1 quart of por15, I did my rear half of frame, gas tank, gas tank skid plate, floorboards and other misc stuff. That was all with two coats. 1 quart goes a long way. Now I'm stuck with 2 more quarts just sittin around.

Pics are in my build thread in my signature.

Por 15, is awesome.  My job is pretty much on the beach, and when we can't hot dip, or go stainless, we use Por 15.  It even beats out the Imron paint we use.  We buy it by the gallon, and stock it in Grey and Black.  Make sure you prep the surface, and wear gloves.

I would also get some ZINK bars and put them in the frame.

We also use Zinc anodes, a great sacrificial corrosion inhibitor.

 this is what i'm talkin about.

I checked out the web site for the zinc. i'm guessing weld on plates? how many plates, or lbs of zinc?  I.E. like get 6 bars and weld 3  bars up the inside of each frame rail.  or 12 bars weld 6 up each frame rail inside and out?   then once the zinc is welded in place por-15 over that?

sorry for the million questions, but like i said in a previous post. i have only really just rattle canned my frames before.

I have never used Zinc anodes on a truck but 1 small one in front and one in the rear, I think would take care of everything in between.  2 things to remember, in my experience, they take a long time to start working. 2- don't paint over them, and if you bolt them on make sure the touch bare metal somewhere.  They are not a cure-all against corrosion, but a definite helper in the long run.

I think I paid $45 for a quart of por15, or $30ish for a pint.  Haven't had the chance to use it yet, but I'll be spraying it out of a gun I'm willing to throw away; read HF gun  ;)
