What to do for drivetrain. techs needed.
« on: Dec 31, 2004, 05:13:29 PM »
So here is my situation. I was the lucky winner on pirate for a bunch of high angle driveline work. I have an 83 toyota (long wheel base) with my stock 22r/L52.

My plan had been to just go with 4.70s so i wouldnt have to spend money on drivelines, but now that i dont have to i am able to go with dual cases.

Question is since i have the oppurtunity to change my driveline i was thinking about going to one of the longier trannys. Which route should i go?

Is the R series worth it? If i get that trans do both cases have to be 23 spline? If that seems to far out which G or W should i get? Let me know all yalls thoughts. I can go any direction and want to do this only once. thanks.

p.s. ill try to find some pics because threads are better with pics.

Id just upgrade to a w-56 for the $ compared to the price of an R-series.  And if you ever have any problems with the W you can just put a R in it later.  The only real difference is the R- series is 1/2" longer (I think) and its got a 23 spline output.  Which you can easily set up for a decent price.

EDIT:  Of course the R-series are WAY stronger and have a lower first gear too but I meant the only real differences in the overall dimensions and spline count.  Not trying to confuse anyone.

even the L52 is a decent tranny.  it's the same as a G52 only with an iron case with integral bellhousing and a shorter tailhousing/tailshaft

R151F would be a cool tranny, but $$$

Im a very pratical person and my thinking is that later on if something happened to my tranny i could swap in the easier to find g or w if i had one of those or the r. Im leaning towards the r but do i need both cases to be 23 spline to use it?

You dont need both of them to be 23 but Id highly recomend it so there would never be any problems with breaking the input on the second case.

Ok then i just would need to find a 23 spline for the front low range right? I will try to get both that way but if moneys tight then i will go with one.

What I would do is put the stock lowrange gears in the front box and get either Marlins 23 spline 2.28:1 gears or the 4.7's that way youd have the better input in the rear as the Marlin input gears are far stronger than stock.  It wouldnt be a good idea to put a weaker of the 2 inputs in the rear as it sees far more torque than the front case.

i take it you can put a 21 spline case in the front and a 23 spline case in the rear?

i'm asking because when i eventually do dual cases, i want to put in a set of 4.7s in the rear case and 23 spline is the same cost.  reasoning behind the 4.7s is that the case i'm gonna be using in the rear is a '79-80 style with the weaker input shaft with the raised splines
